Relief efforts continue in Southeast Asia after a devastating 7.7 earthquake shook Myanmar and its neighbors on Fri, Mar 28. Per an update shared by the Myanmar authorities on Sat, the💔 death toll has risen above 1,600. In addition, authorities report >3,000 people are injured, with over 100 others missing.

The earthquake is the most powerful to strike Myanmar in over a century.

In an email to #USAID staff, Jeremy Lewin, a #DOGE ofcl who took over running the day-to-day ops at USAID from Pete Marocco on March 20, said the RIFs would go into effect either on July 1 or Sept 2.

This comes as the #Trump admin wraps up the dismantling of the 64-year-old USAID, having terminated some 5,200 contracts, & moves forward with its plan to shift the remaining portion of its work to the #State Dept.

The #Trump admin is terminating nearly all of the remaining 900 employees of the #USAID, in a final reduction-in-force #RIF.

Virtually no one will be spared, not even political appointees, acc/to 2 snr USAID ofcls….

Staff were ordered to leave "the front office" by 1PM on Fri for reasons that are not clear, the ofcls said. But they may still be asked to continue working for a few months.

In any other circumstance, I would not imagine anyone agreeing to 'repay' anything (with Interest) - given by someone else in charge - for the period when that money previously had no strings attached. Future aid, maybe, but anything given before a new agreement, no.

But Trump is the sort of person who would see someone else give a gift, and months later ask why the recipient hadn't paid him for it.

#Trump has said a #minerals deal will help secure a peace agreement by giving the United States a financial stake in Ukraine's future. He also sees it as America's way of earning back…[the #aid] it has given to #Ukraine…. Most of the aid funds were spent in the US.
