Tesla dropped LIDAR from their cars and is relying on just camera visuals for their self-driving feature. That’s a big problem. Watch this comparison between a car that incorporates LIDAR vs a Tesla, and see the Tesla slam into the “pedestrian” again & again.

The tests include a tromp l’oeil wall, which is probably silly, but the other tests are valid.

And here is one of the many reasons why I’ve never latched onto the idea of #AutonomousVehicles as being the revolutionary game-changer so many of my #blind friends think it is. There’s just way, way too much out of your control, and even now there are times when manual override is required. mas.toJorge Stolfi (@JorgeStolfi@mas.to)The biggest problem with self-driving cars is that the driving itself is completely controlled by software, that can be updated through the net without knowledge of the owner. Thus the car can be programmed remotely and silently -- by a rogue employee, by a hacker, by the gov -- to spy on its movements, to drive off a cliff or into upcoming traffic, maybe even to catch fire with the doors locked. That should be an unacceptable security risk, and reason enough to ban such cars.
