A short video of a cute bee-fly from the garden, having a feed on the grape hyacinths. They must like these flowers as they return frequently. (bonus gulls in the soundtrack!)

Another Dark-edged Bee Fly (Bombylius major).
Several of these were hovering but at around 20cm off the ground, in open sunshine over dried mud.
The Eristalis were also hovering but at around 1.7m and kept close to the hedge.
These were also hanging around their mining bee hosts.
Is it a bee? Is it a fly? No, I think this is a Bee Fly (Comptosia)!
This one was hanging on the screen door this morning, quietly minding its own business. Maybe 2 inches long, and 3 from wingtip to wingtip.
Look at this fuzzy little cutie! Systoechus solitus, a bee fly that is trying hard to make you think it is a bumblebee.
just cute bee flies with some adorable sweets!
This is available on mugs, shirts, pillows, and totes. #beeflies #beefly #pattern #artistshop
Looks like a bee, but this is mimicry.
The large bee-flies (Bombylus major) are always fun to watch. Their proboscis appears to be almost as long as the fly itself.

@sciencebase Bee flies are soo flighty, I waited *years* for a photo. One day in 2011 (when I astonishingly happened to have my macro rig in hand, no less!) I looked down and saw one sunning itself on some split cedar. I never thought I’d get the shot, but it stayed several milliseconds longer than I’d ever have imagined it might, whilst cleaning its proboscis! #macro #beefly

The second clip shows a Honey Bee disturbed on Ceanothus by a Dark-edged Bee-fly.
Spring has started quite slowly: still relatively few nectar sources and daytime temperatures need to be a bit higher too.2 of 2

This Greater Bee-fly was taking a late breakfast of Biscutella auriculata when I snapped him yesterday while out on the dog walk.
