A series of tabletop role-playing games I'm fond of. Burning Wheel is about as unique a TTRPG as exists. Its a perfect blend of character crunch and storytelling with a narrative bent focusing on characters Beliefs, Instincts, and Traits.

sometimes I open #BurningWheel and am in awe of the system. But then I hit my head on the mechanics of it and have to admire it from afar.
Reign is one of those systems that I was hoping might turn out to be the perfect RPG. Because that's what I'm looking for, and I'm sure it must exist, but none of the previous contenders weren't quite it. The previous contender was Burning Wheel, which I'd heard a lot of good stuff about, and the way Beliefs work is really great, and a big part of what I'm looking for. Only the rest of the system was extremely fiddly with excessive amounts of detail in some places (the enormous skill list) but fantastic bits in other places (lifepaths), but also some gaping holes (anything in between Fight and Bloody Versus).
Reign is next on my radar, and some stuff I read about it makes it sound it might be almost perfect. The dice system is unique and really interesting, but ultimately I fear it might be a bit gimmicky. You roll a dice pool of d10s, and all dice that come up with the same number form a set. You can roll multiple sets, and for each action you declared (which could be more than one), you pick one of your sets. The number of dice in the set is its width, the number on the dice is the height. Getting two different dimensions out of a single roll is a really cool idea. The problem is that the system tends to use these two dimensions for more than two things, which can have weird results.
For example, hits to your legs are easier to parry than hits to your head. I think that's the big one to me. Another one is that quick attacks that go first, also do more damage. I have less issue with that, but with 4 effects mapped to the two dimensions of the roll, I do wonder if two rolls wouldn't have made more sense.
Something I really love about it is that, unlike Burning Wheel, this system is intentionally a toolbox, meant to be tinkered with. Lots of optional rules and suggestions how to adapt it. These seem to be 5 chapters on combat; not sure if they're all the same system or alternatives, but clearly you can start easy and add detail as required.
IM GONNA RUN EAT THE REICH!!!!1!!11!!
Yes I'm excited. An opening presented itself in our regular Burning Wheel game and everyone was not only on but excited.
So that is happening. Just wanted to shout it from the rooftops.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End nakes me want to play a Burning Wheel game about an elf in human lands just slice-of-lifeing their way through the existential dread of immortality and grief. Probably with more upfront drama than the anime. Could a fun 1-on-1 game, or for two players, one the elf and the other their human sidekick/companion. #anime #ttrpg #burningwheel #rpg
18 - Memorable moment of play
When I got to play a character straight to the illogical conclusion of her storyline. Engineer, smart, self reliable. Acknowledged Faith, Gods etc but but always as one way to reshape the world. Play revealed all "great masters"/saints of old were just puppets by some brain parasite with the Church heralding them as divinely inspired. Long story short (continues below)
I'm curious if there are system out there fitting these loose criteria:
* Fantasy or fantasy-adjacent
* Setting neutral or setting agnostic
* Important not based on the assumption or premise that starting characters will be itinerant "adventurers"
* On the slightly crunchier side
* Flexible in terms of campaign setup/style
The only systems that I can think of that truly fit these are #GURPS, #Reign and, to an extent, #BurningWheel , but I'm surely overlooking some gems.
After the notes-apocalypse of the #burningwheel game, the group's taking it easy with a one shot of The Pool tonight. Still miffed about the loss of material for BW and feeling strangely demotivated. Need to find something that'll spark excitement about a new campaign.
What weird and awesome stuff are y'all out there playing?
There was a reddit post stating that Luke Crane, creator of Burning Wheel, has acquired the rights to Dungeon World and is planning to work on a 2nd edition. Apparently this news broke on a discord server but I'm having a hard time finding anything else on it.

Gotta say, the fact that my notes for my current Burning Wheel game are now under the accursed "This file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" sure put a damper on things. #ttrpg #rpg #burningwheel

11 RPGs with great one shot support.
The best one shot I ever ran (twice) was with #BurningWheel
I don't remember the title of this scenario but the set up is that a sick looking inquisitor comes into an inn with a young woman who is believed to be a witch.
Soon after the inquisitor is found dead with the girl shackled in his room. The PCs all want something different from the witch.
I loved the way the game handles PvP conflicts and how the beliefs drive the action.
3 - Most often played RPG (the last year)
"Hate" to admit it but it would probably be D&D 5e. With that group we have a back-up GM that runs their game when the primary GM is away. So Tuesday nights WILL be D&D. Second place is #BurningWheel but there we have no back-up GM so it falls behind a little. And the things I run is shorter stuffs with various systems so it doesn't rank up the same numbers. Last year my most run system is #dragonbane with #stoneburner second.
Okay y'all, I know we're still mad at Wizards for the whole OGL thing, but this set of magic: the gathering might have some of the best inspiration I've ever seen for games like Mausritter and Mouse Guard TTRPG. I mean just look at these factions!
I want to build a cube out of these.
Might be running a #burningwheel game soon, and I'm thinking of shamelessly ripping off Arx Fatalis and NK Jemisin's #brokenearth novels. My quandary is which of these is most exciting:
1) The immediate aftermath of the cataclysm as a group moves into a vault/shelter
2) The internal dynamics of a community while the cataclysm still rages outside, no end in sight
3) The fate of a group as the calamity begins to subside and leaving the "vault" becomes viable
I didn't expect to be drawing comparisons between #ElectricBastionland and #BurningWheel but they both do a remarkably good job of presenting the entirety of their lore through gameable content. EB does it through failed careers, item descriptions, and spark tables. BW uses life paths, skills, and the most interesting approach to mechanical differentiation between character "stock" (heritage) I've ever seen.
@camckinney I prefer randomized character creation or coming up with a vague concept (space miner, in her 40s, divorced, misses her best friend) and develop peculiarities during the first game session on the fly. I also dig lifepath systems as presented in games such as #Traveller, The #Burningwheel (impressive, but too complicated for me), or #Cyberpunk
I just bought and started reading #FabulaUltima . I knew it stemmed from #Ryutaama, but I was really surprised to see a lot of #burningwheel DNA in there. The meta currency, the traits and bounds, the way conflicts can be fights as well as a trial or a pursuit, the whole "fight for what you believe in", all great stuff.
