Darlingtonia californica, alternately called "cobra lilly", California pitcher plant and Oregon pitcher plant, is a carnivorous plant that lives in nitrogen poor, serpentine derived bog soils in southwestern Oregon and far northwestern California. Underneath the hood is an opening. Insects enter, attracted by the sweet nectar the plant produces, get trapped by downward pointing hairs, and eventually drown in the pool of water at the base. There, they are broken down by bacteria, freeing up the nutrients in the insects' bodies for use by the plant.
I spotted some growing along the roadside that for some reason I had never noticed before. I pulled a U-turn and stopped to photograph them. There's also a very nice botanical preserve that leads to a spectacular bog full of them right off the roadway.
