Jeri Dansky<p>Just spoke with my financial advisor/money manager to confirm that none of my investments had anything to do with cryptocurrencies. He said if I even suggested such an investment he'd argue strongly against it. </p><p>(I figured that's what he'd say, but I wanted to be sure.)</p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/today" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>today</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>crypto</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Perhaps because of its complexity and perhaps because Trump has been relatively open about his crypto investment — in contrast to the administration’s behavior with regard to the Jeffrey Epstein files — the electorate has remained relatively quiescent.</p><p>Insofar as that remains true, Trump is very likely to use his remaining three and a half years in office to lift his cryptocurrency profits to new heights. He is already well on his way — if he is not already there — to setting the record for making money while serving as president.</p><p>He may, in fact, make more money while in office than all his predecessors combined — an achievement he will probably boast of in retirement, whenever that comes."</p><p><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/29/opinion/trump-crypto-genius-act-memcoin.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nytimes.com/2025/07/29/opinion</span><span class="invisible">/trump-crypto-genius-act-memcoin.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GeniusAct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GeniusAct</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Kleptocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kleptocracy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Plutocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Plutocracy</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"The prosecution’s flailing attempts to navigate around the Blanche memo exemplify the incoherence of the Trump administration’s approach to cryptocurrency enforcement: sweeping regulatory rollbacks that primarily benefit wealthy crypto operators, while simultaneously pushing ahead with aggressive prosecutions of developers like Storm to avoid the appearance of being soft on North Korea or cybercrime more broadly. The result is a prosecution that must somehow prove that Storm failed to implement specific compliance controls, without being able to point to any regulations outlining these controls that he supposedly failed to follow.</p><p>With their legal theory in shambles, prosecutors have resorted to tenuous guilt-by-association arguments and mischaracterized evidence. They’ve tried to hold Storm responsible for scams that may not have even touched Tornado Cash, argued that he should be culpable for not helping scam victims in ways that would not have been technically possible, and built a case for intent around chat messages that turned out to be forwarded news inquiries rather than evidence of criminal conspiracy. What remains is less a coherent prosecution than a cautionary tale about the dangers of letting political imperatives drive criminal cases."</p><p><a href="https://www.citationneeded.news/tornado-cash-roman-storm-prosecution/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">citationneeded.news/tornado-ca</span><span class="invisible">sh-roman-storm-prosecution/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/TornadoCash" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TornadoCash</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Ethereum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ethereum</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Anonymity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Anonymity</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"With President Trump’s signature, the Genius Act stablecoin bill is the first significant US cryptocurrency legislation to become law. The bill passed the Senate on June 17 [I86], the House on July 17, and hit Trump’s desk the following day. During the “Crypto Week” blitz, the House also passed the Clarity Act market structure bill and the Anti-CBDC Surveillance State Act, two other crypto bills that will now go to the Senate [I88].</p><p>Many crypto billionaires who attended the signing had spent millions installing crypto-friendly lawmakers in Congress and backing Trump last election cycle in hopes of this moment. Trump thanked them for their campaign support and blasted the Biden administration, remarking, “half of you were under arrest for no reason”, and later adding, “I got you guys out of so much trouble”. Speaking of the Winklevoss twins, who run the Gemini crypto exchange and are among the industry’s big political spenders, Trump said, “They’ve got plenty of cash, and it’s great that you’re on our side.”"</p><p><a href="https://www.citationneeded.news/issue-89/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">citationneeded.news/issue-89/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Kleptocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kleptocracy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Plutocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Plutocracy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GeniusAct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GeniusAct</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Stablecoins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Stablecoins</span></a></p>

Tokens vesting this week are worth nearly $930 million at Wednesday’s price of about $10.30.</p><p>The so-called unlock means early investors or insiders previously restricted from selling the coins are now free to trade them. About 200 million Trump memecoins became available at the Jan. 17 launch, so the unlock will increase the circulating supply by 45%. The total amount outstanding will reach 1 billion in less than three years, with 800 million originally locked and held by Trump-affiliated entities.</p><p>Trump’s share of the coins will add $93 million to his $6.4 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which hasn’t previously included the locked coins in calculations of his wealth. The president also made about $150 million from sales and trading of the memecoin through mid-June, according to an analysis by crypto-risk modeling firm Gauntlet.</p><p>Memecoins have no underlying value, rather they trade based on sentiment. Still, a jump in supply could sink their price. Crypto entrepreneur Justin Sun wrote last week on X that he would buy $100 million worth, helping send the price up more than 10%. Earlier this month Sun’s Tron network added the memecoin to its supported tokens."</p><p><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-07-16/trump-memecoin-unlock-to-test-crypto-demand-boost-president-s-wealth" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bloomberg.com/news/articles/20</span><span class="invisible">25-07-16/trump-memecoin-unlock-to-test-crypto-demand-boost-president-s-wealth</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Memecoins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Memecoins</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Prominent crypto firms such as Robinhood, Republic, Coinbase, and Kraken are rapidly moving towards “tokenizing” traditional stocks, and pressuring regulators to allow it. Instead of buying your shares of publicly traded firms via a brokerage account that places orders on the NYSE or Nasdaq, you would use a crypto trading app to purchase a token representing a share. Companies hoping to develop such platforms usually promote the idea by saying that a blockchainified stock market would expand trading hours, and would be more accessible to international investors who didn’t want to go through the somewhat onerous process of opening an American brokerage account.</p><p>These companies don’t usually admit that, by encasing stocks in a blockchainy wrapper, they hope to tap into lucrative equities markets while sidestepping the expensive compliance and oversight requirements of traditional American brokerages and exchanges. This fits the long history of companies trying to use blockchains as a magic get-out-of-regulation-free wand, reminiscent of the 2017 bubble when companies used “initial coin offerings” (ICOs) to try to sidestep IPO regulations.d Indeed, Robinhood has been heavily lobbying for “a new regulatory approach [that’s] needed to allow tokenization to flourish” and not “stifle growth and innovation”.1 Regular readers of this newsletter will recognize this language as the standard rhetoric of a crypto company asking for carveouts and exemptions from regulations we collectively learned are necessary, oh, about a century ago — when a speculative bubble emerged around stocks sold to the public based on false or incomplete information and we wound up in the Great Depression."</p><p><a href="https://www.citationneeded.news/issue-88/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">citationneeded.news/issue-88/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Tokenization" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tokenization</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/RWAs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RWAs</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/StockMarket" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>StockMarket</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/CasinoCapitalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CasinoCapitalism</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Blockchain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Blockchain</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"If Aqua 1 Foundation has been working with World Liberty Financial since the president’s primary crypto venture launched in September 2024, there’s little to no evidence of the relationship in the public record. Trump did travel to the UAE in May 2025, where he announced “over $200 billion in commercial deals between the United States and the United Arab Emirates.” Two weeks later, someone began registering websites and social media accounts for Aqua 1 Foundation.</p><p>The president’s latest crypto benefactors, whoever they turn out to be, stand to gain enormously from their $100 million investment. Until now, the $WLFI token has only been a “governance token,” granting its holders the right to vote on proposed changes to the World Liberty Financial platform. But the token itself has been nontransferrable—meaning that anyone buying it was putting money into a token that couldn’t be sold or moved. That’s about to change. World Liberty Financial recently put out a vote to “unlock” $WLFI tokens, allowing them to be moved between wallets—a change that won the fulsome support from the current holders of $WLFI. Soon, $WLFI will be tradable on public markets, and its early backers will be able to cash out—ensuring, in turn, that the most flagrantly corrupt president in American history will once again line his pockets."</p><p><a href="https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/trump-crypto-world-liberty-financial-aqua-1-foundation/#" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">thenation.com/article/archive/</span><span class="invisible">trump-crypto-world-liberty-financial-aqua-1-foundation/#</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Aqua1Foundation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Aqua1Foundation</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/WLFI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WLFI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Kleptocracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Kleptocracy</span></a></p>

They have just surpassed shady crypto billionaire Justin Sun and his $75 million investment to become the single largest holder of WLFI tokens. World Liberty also profited massively last month from a deal in which Emirati investment firm MGX used the company’s USD1 stablecoin to perform a $2 billion investment into Binance [I83]. In a press release, Aqua 1 claimed that they and World Liberty would work closely to “jointly identify and nurture high-potential blockchain projects”, and said that World Liberty “plans to support the launch of Aqua 1’s Aqua Fund — a UAE-domiciled investment fund ... dedicated to accelerating the Middle East’s digital economy transformation”. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Yes, you read that right: The Orb combines biometric surveillance and cryptocurrencies, in the form of Worldcoin, a token that has lost 90% of its value after a euphoric peak in 2024. It turns out that speculative currency backed by eyeball scans doesn’t make for a stable business model. Or not yet. Making the Orb and with it Worldcoin a feature of Reddit looks like a great way to change that. Great for Sam Altman.</p><p>Let’s be clear: The real asset in this setting is not the coin. It is your identity.</p><p>The Orb is now being pitched as the answer to AI manipulation, bot swarms, and identity fraud – all of which ironically are to a large extent the result of the kind of “innovation”, which Sam Altman helped unleash. And Reddit, the platform targeted in the Zurich study, is now in talks to integrate this system.</p><p>Even if the crypto payout is not (yet) at the center of the Reddit integration, the system behind it doesn’t change. The Orb wasn’t designed just to verify identity but to lure people into a system that rewards biometric submission with digital tokens.</p><p>And it’s irreversible: Once you’ve looked into the Orb, you can’t unlook. Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"The question then is why are Donald Trump, JD Vance and their MAGA brethren hellbent on boosting stablecoins further?<br>Besides the obvious self-enrichment motive, the more interesting explanation is that stablecoins fit in nicely with the Trump administration’s goal of shrinking global trade imbalances to “Make America Great Again”. Nothing motivates these people more than the idea that what is good for their bank account is good for America.</p><p>Team Trump has made its intentions clear: to devalue the dollar and shrink America’s trade deficit, while preserving its dominance by using the threat of tariffs. Stablecoins have a key role in this plan. Suppose, for instance, Japan were to be bullied into using a considerable portion of its $1.2 trillion holdings to buy dollar-denominated stablecoins. The dollar’s aggregate supply would rise, devaluing the dollar. The stablecoin issuers would use the dollars it receives to buy Treasury bills, thus reducing the US government’s borrowing costs and, in the process, bolstering dollar supremacy. In the words of JD Vance, a greater stablecoin uptake will be “a force multiplier of our economic might”.</p><p>But stablecoins pose systemic risks that Team Trump would be wise to not ignore. Stablecoin issuers stand to profit from issuing more tokens than the dollars they collect or from purchasing relatively illiquid (but higher interest rate yielding) securities."</p><p><a href="https://unherd.com/2025/06/when-stablecoin-alchemy-met-trumps-genius/?us" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">unherd.com/2025/06/when-stable</span><span class="invisible">coin-alchemy-met-trumps-genius/?us</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Bitcoin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bitcoin</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Stablecoins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Stablecoins</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"As real money flooded into bitcoin, the cypherpunks were superseded by venture capitalists, money launderers, authoritarian tech billionaires, and a broad swath of the MAGA movement that saw bitcoin's general anti-government orientation as consistent with Trumpian populism. Many of them also saw it as a way to get rich. But the transformation of bitcoin's $2 trillion political economy has mostly left everyday retail traders behind. Even as bitcoin has soared in value, trading volume on exchanges has plummeted since its 2021 highs. It remains little used as a currency, with El Salvador, the one country to officially adopt bitcoin as a currency, scaling back its project.</p><p>In the 2024 election cycle, bitcoin's overwhelming partisan shift became impossible to ignore when the crypto industry raised more than $200 million to support Trump and a slate of largely Republican candidates. In return, the industry has seen the dismantling of crypto crime task forces across federal agencies; the loosening of financial regulation; the pardoning of the Silk Road drug market's founder, Ross Ulbricht; a reshuffling at the Securities and Exchange Commission; the veritable dismantlement of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau; an end to most federal lawsuits and prosecutions against major crypto companies and individuals; the establishment of a national crypto stockpile that has the potential to buoy token prices; and, perhaps more surprisingly, the emergence of President Donald Trump as the country's most powerful crypto entrepreneur.""</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-billionaires-zyn-bitcoin-conference-crypto-maga-vegas-casino-vance-2025-6" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">businessinsider.com/trump-bill</span><span class="invisible">ionaires-zyn-bitcoin-conference-crypto-maga-vegas-casino-vance-2025-6</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Crypto" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Crypto</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Cryptocurrencies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Cryptocurrencies</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Bitcoin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bitcoin</span></a></p>
