As is the case every single time, looking up tutorials for Davinci Resolve is a waste of time. For my lastest search, the best video tutorial I found was 10 minutes too long (as usual) and was missing 3 steps. This was the best one. The rest were 35 minutes of garbage surrounding a total gloss over of the subject.

I'm sure these people are good at using Resolve, but they are definitely not good at presenting a topic.

PSA to DaVinci Resolve 20 users on Linux that experience crashing when doing anything in Fusion -

This is apparently caused by missing language packs, which can be installed under the following names:

Debian derivatives: locales
RHEL derivatives: glibc-all-langpacks

Credit goes to the following post during the v20 beta period, which still applies as of v20.0.1 stable.

If you're a #Fedora and #DavinciResolve user, I highly recommend installing github.com/H3rz3n/davinci-help next time you want to set it up on your system.

Just set Resolve up on my Thinkpad and it made it completely painless to get up and running. No dep hunting or making sure I have all the opencl bits installed 💯

@eugenialoli same with photo #raw processing, non of the #foss apps use the color profiles of the cameras, no 16bit raw and many other issues. I gave up retouch due to the still bad gimp ux and the bad implementation of non destructive editing.

The sad reality is the #linuxdesktop is not ready for professional #mediaproduction and this is such a bad thing in times like this.

#davinciresolve also barely runs on everything except nvidia on #linux and still has no #flatpak

Even blender is a pain with amd #rocm

DaVinci Resolve sucks at compression. Idk if anyone following me needs to see this, but if you need to hit a small file size, just do a mid quality render then compress it with HandBrake. :T

For reference, the DaVinci compressed version is 197MB, the Handbrake one is 193MB.

Good morning Fedi friends!

Not much to report on the #selfhosting side... I need to update #Ghost to its latest version but I have another day of filming ahead... so maybe I'll get into it tomorrow morning while my husband takes care of our daughter. VPS Snapshot -> a couple of commands and the new Ghost should be updated in give or take 10 minutes (if all goes well, ha!)

My point today was to say that being a beginner is really humbling. I've been a total newbie in the self-hosting / Linux space. How fun it is to learn new things!

And now I'm experiencing the newbie feeling in my professional field - filmmaking - as I am learning a new editing system: #DaVinciResolve.

I started out editing in #FinalCut Pro in film school... then moved over to #AdobePremiere when Apple remade Final Cut from scratch, simplifying it for beginners. And now that Adobe is on the highway to enshittification and is hiking prices to extortionate levels, I am moving to DaVinciResolve.

When I moved from Final Cut to #Adobe Premiere I imported Final Cut shortcuts... so it was really easy to get started fast. Professional editors use keyboard shortcuts for EVERYTHING and almost never go to the menu for actions... Well, there is no such thing as importing shortcuts into DVR, so I need to learn its shortcuts from scratch. And it's a lot of fun! A little embarrassing to say that yesterday it took me 10 minutes and multiple searches to figure out that to cut a clip at a specific point I had to use command-B.

It's super humbling to feel like a beginner in film editing - when, in my previous life, I used to spend 10 hours a day every day editing or doing motion graphics. I hit the proverbial 10,000 hours many times over.

I love this "newbie" feeling and I never get tired of learning.

Wishing everyone a great day!

Bonjour Fedi friends!

I haven't been posting about #selfhosting lately because my entire life has been taken over by filmmaking – creating a promo video for the #Fediverse with the amazing @samaaberg and @TheLifeofTarzan

I miss Terminal, Linux commands and installing / updating things... but I am on a new learning journey. After nearly a decade of editing in Adobe Premiere, I am now moving to #DaVinciResolve. At this point Adobe's prices are extortionate... I will have to do motion graphics in AfterEffects but I won't be paying for multiple Creative Cloud apps.

The learning curve for DaVinci Resolve is a little steeper than expected but I'm having a lot of fun.

And yes, yes, I know, at some point I will try the #FOSS video editing software https://kdenlive.org. On my to do list for the summer!

I hope you're having a lovely day 🌞
