Richard Carlsson<p><a href="https://mastodon.nu/tags/Devcontainers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Devcontainers</span></a> are quite useful, but getting file ownership right on <a href="https://mastodon.nu/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> can be frustrating. I got the canned file to work, but as I soon as I make a change to the Dockerfile, shit goes south, and there's more magic I'd have to learn to figure it out. I had a home-grown docker-compose.yml approach that I've used before. Maybe I'll just do that again. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/docker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>docker</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/programming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>programming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/development" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>development</span></a>. <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/deepFuckingSigh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>deepFuckingSigh</span></a></p>

Vladimir<p>If you, just like me, wanted to try Dev Containers, but couldn't, because there was no support in VS Codium, I made an extension. I made it primarily for my own needs but I invite you to try it and contribute too.</p><p>The way it works is extremely simple. It builds containers with DevPod (<a href="https://github.com/loft-sh/devpod" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">github.com/loft-sh/devpod</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>) and connects to them using Open SSH extension (<a href="https://github.com/jeanp413/open-remote-ssh" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/jeanp413/open-remot</span><span class="invisible">e-ssh</span></a>). That's it.</p><p>You can find it at:<br>- <a href="https://github.com/3timeslazy/vscodium-devpodcontainers" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/3timeslazy/vscodium</span><span class="invisible">-devpodcontainers</span></a><br>- <a href="https://open-vsx.org/extension/3timeslazy/vscodium-devpodcontainers" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">open-vsx.org/extension/3timesl</span><span class="invisible">azy/vscodium-devpodcontainers</span></a></p><p>While making this extension, I also wrote some of my thoughts about dev containers tooling. You can read them here: <a href="https://techhub.social/@3timeslazy/113022591492167578" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">techhub.social/@3timeslazy/113</span><span class="invisible">022591492167578</span></a></p><p>I would also like to mention <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@sitnik_ru" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>sitnik_ru</span></a></span> 's thread on this topic: <a href="https://mastodon.social/@sitnik_ru/112478911770136745" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">mastodon.social/@sitnik_ru/112</span><span class="invisible">478911770136745</span></a>. Gilbert Sanchez :omya_windows:<p>Some folks hate <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/devcontainers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>devcontainers</span></a> , but I think they can remove a huge barrier to entry for new contributors. I also think they encourage polyglotism by allowing you to quickly get started in a new language. In my post I also mention how it helped me contribute to <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/starship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>starship</span></a> with <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/rustlang" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rustlang</span></a>. <a href="https://gilbertsanchez.com/posts/power-devcontainers/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gilbertsanchez.com/posts/power</span><span class="invisible">-devcontainers/</span></a></p>
ballpointcarrot<p>I get the desire for <a href="https://fedi.bpc.wtf/tags/devcontainers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>devcontainers</span></a>: spin up a pre-enclosed environment with everything you need to do work on a given project.</p><p>However, I wish the tooling wasn't targeted to basically vscode only. I'm sitting here trying to think about how I make use of that with <a href="https://fedi.bpc.wtf/tags/helix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>helix</span></a> or <a href="https://fedi.bpc.wtf/tags/neovim" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neovim</span></a>. The answer seems to largely be "embed the editor in the devcontainer," but then I have concerns with "my config isn't needed in other peoples' use of this runtime." I'd love for the ability to do a user-level devcontainers customization, so that I can incorporate my personal changes without affecting the actual definition (thinking like the user level <code>.gitconfig</code> vs. each projects <code>.git/config</code>).</p><p>An then the other part of me is thinking "nobody else is really using this but me, so why does it matter?"</p><p>And the next time I look up, an hour has passed, and I've gotten nothing done, and I have to move onto something else. This is part of why I never get anything done :ablobweary:</p>
