New blog post. Trying to pick apart the ecosystem classification system in Victoria, and uncover what its real function is. Comments, shares, corrections etc all welcome.

(And can anyone think of a publication that might accept articles such as this? Something more widely read than my blog, I mean)

as the river goes by · Categorising ecosystems or categorising ecocide?Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs) are designed to facilitate the legal destruction of nature via offsetting. They are not suitable as guides to restoration.

Update of the dataset from La Chanta, a former quarry owned by Holcim España. Holcim has embraced a model of #rehabilitation for mining sites focused on #biodiversity:

In 2021, Holcim signed a stewardship agreement with NGO Brinzal, which has recorded 312 species occurrences, conducting systematic monitoring of various ecological groups. This effort shows that #ecologicalrestoration can foster diverse and healthy ecosystems.

🌺If you are looking for something positive you can do right now for the #environment (that is also #antiFascist), because #ClimateChange and land use (habitat loss) are two sides of the same coin, find a 'Friends of _____' group and start to learn about #RestorationEcology. It's hard to see and interact with climate, but its very possible to develop relationships with the landscape, no matter where we live.🌱

🌲Restoration is a lovely, impactful way to build community around local natural spaces. The idea is to create and support (diverse) refuge areas that are resistant to human pressures. Patches of wilderness that can serve as a bridge between larger conservancies. Imagine a pit stop for #bees, #plants, #fungi, and #birds. Urban or rural. No matter how small. There are many approaches and no right one. It combines seamlessly with #NatureEducation and appreciation. Search for conservancies, natural areas, land trusts, state, county, or city parks. It doesnt have to be swanky: it can be the drainage way behind your neighborhood (the more local, the better).🪻

🌳There are also many many different roles to get involved in that can make it #accessible! Nature education and land use planning are severely under-utilized areas, as is citizen wildlife monitoring. You can grow plants for restoration in your garden or in your window. (Responsibly) collect native seed from areas of abundance and scatter it in bare places. If you dont know where to start, just learning plant names and their relationships is hugely rewarding, because you will start to see patterns in the landscape that will allow you to interpret and share with others (*chills*). 🌼

🌾I know people are stretched really thin right now, but #nature is so restorative and #EcologicalRestoration connects me to my neighbors. It provides an easy platform for broader community organizing, which seems relevant right now. We aren't separate from nature: we are a part of it. It always gives back more than we put in 🪷

A fine new #OpenAccess paper by my colleagues at NCF #ncfindia jointly with #agroforestry owners/managers, highlighting the potential of shade #coffee agroforests as native plant and seed sources to support #EcologicalRestoration and diversifying native saplings for agroforests themselves. This also holds the potential for more ethical seed and seedling sourcing and reducing the native seed collection impacts/dependence on #forest remnants.

A mataī seedling (Prumnopitys taxifolia), black pine. It's probably at least a couple of hundred years or more since seedlings of this species have appeared in this area south of the Wairau River.
The closest I've seen have been to the north in Pukaka Valley about 15km away.
Normally dioecious. I'm curious to know where pollen came from to pollinate this tree, and fortunate that this one's a female.
My (now deceased) father planted a tree 40-50 years ago, and now it's finally mature enough to fruit.
The irony is I never intended to return to my childhood home, but if I hadn't the property would have been sold, and someone would probably have cut the mataī down, unaware of its endemic status.
Although not endangered, these lowland podocarps are now uncommon and having one seeding in the Blenheim Ecological District is probably quite unique.

My mountain meadow restoration project (and my book about it) got a nice write-up in today's Washington Post! Article by Ashley Stimpson, photos by Matt McClain.

BioMed CentralHarnessing the synergy of Urochloa brizantha and Amazonian Dark Earth microbiomes for enhanced pasture recovery - BMC MicrobiologyAmazonian Dark Earths (ADEs) are fertile soils from the Amazon rainforest that harbor microorganisms with biotechnological potential. This study aimed to investigate the individual and potential synergistic effects of a 2% portion of ADEs and Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu roots (Brazil’s most common grass species used for pastures) on soil prokaryotic communities and overall soil attributes in degraded soil. We conducted a comprehensive plant succession experiment in the greenhouse, utilizing vase soil samples for next-generation sequencing of 16 S rDNA, enzymatic activity assays, and soil chemical properties analysis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to understand better the prokaryotic interactions within soil environments influenced by ADEs and U. brizantha roots, including differential abundance, diversity, and network analyses. Our findings reveal a complementary relationship between U. brizantha and ADEs, each contributing to distinct positive aspects of soil bacterial communities and quality. The combined influence of U. brizantha roots and ADEs exhibited synergies that enhanced prokaryotic diversity and enzyme activity. This balance supported plant growth and increased the general availability of beneficial bacteria in the soil, such as Chujaibacter and Curtobacterium while reducing the presence of potentially pathogenic taxa. This research provided valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of plant-soil feedback, emphasizing the potential for complementary interactions between specific plant species and unique soil environments like ADEs. The findings highlight the potential for pasture ecological rehabilitation and underscore the benefits of integrating plant and soil management strategies to optimize soil characteristics.

You probably see lots of authors pushing pre-orders – – that's because in the "biz" they're considered an early indicator of the life of the book in the world! That in mind, you can pre-order BAD NATURALIST now at 25% off!

Downloaded a book last night and began to explore it, "Native Plant Agriculture Volume 1".

For those with culinary interests, it includes photos of meals made and enjoyed with many of the plants. It is currently out of print, but should be available in hard copy again in 2025.

Would love to get reviews/wisdom from #Indigenous people about this book.
