#Harvard University sued #Trump's administration on Monday in an effort to halt the govt's pause of >$2B in funding for the #US #educational institution.

"Over the course of the past week, the federal government has taken several actions following Harvard’s refusal to comply with its illegal demands," Harvard President Alan Garber said in a statement.

"Moments ago, we filed a lawsuit to halt the funding freeze because it is unlawful & beyond the government's authority," Garber said.

Nepenthes graciliflora “Surigao.” One of two forms of this species I grow; once lumped into N. alata, the split from that species has created significant confusion as many graciliflora, hybrid, and other species continue to be mislabeled as the rather uncommon alata. While that species is quite restricted in range, this one is found through most of the eastern Philippines.

#TaxExempt status is available to charitable, religious & #educational orgs, as well as social welfare groups. But the organizations must strictly adhere to tax laws that prohibit them from engaging in certain political activity. There is NO proof that #Harvard violated any of those guardrails.

“The #IRS is supposed to administer the tax rules impartially, not pursue political #vendettas against exempt organizations,”said Steve Rosenthal, who served as snr fellow at the #TaxPolicy Center.

Most private, nonprofit #colleges & #universities are exempt from paying federal income taxes because they are classified as a 501(c)(3) organization with an #educational mission. Universities do pay other taxes, such as payroll taxes for employees.

“No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit & hire, & which areas of study & inquiry they can pursue,” #Harvard President Alan Garber said in his message.
