Eureka JeansI am making use of the Golden Week holidays in Japan to make another denim jacket—this time based on a Sears Roebucks jacket from the late '70s or early '80s. The standout characteristic of this jacket is the simplification of its construction. Most notably, the front "pleats" have been replaced with two simple rows of stitches that don't even extend up to the front yoke—they stop just beyond the edges of the front pockets, under which they're hidden anyway. They no longer serve any functional purpose; they exist purely as a design detail. The history of workwear construction is deeply tied to increasing production efficiency—a constant balancing act between durability and ease of manufacture. The "fake" pleats on this jacket take this to an extreme, resulting in a garment I find both appalling and fascinating.
