Good morning fellow Mastos and hello to bank holiday Monday, if you are South of the border. I wonder why banks traditionally needed so many holidays? Especially as traditionally, they were never open outside if normal working hours, so you couldn't get to one!

Anyway, have a grand Monday, have fun. Take care.

Today's #Fungus photo is from September 2021 from Otley.

Reading up on trees and how they use underground microrrhizal networks in the forest to communicate and transmit resources to each other. When one tree is in distress the surrounding trees send nutrients and defensive substances to help it recover. It’s not a sacrifice or loss of freedom: they know they need each other to survive droughts and insect infestations and that a sophisticated system of mutual aid is how to make that happen.

Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Prototaxites represents the first giant organisms to live on the terrestrial surface, reaching sizes of 8 metres in the Early Devonian.

It was an extinct lineage of #multicellular terrestrial #eukaryotes.

Assignments to groups of multicellular algae or land plants have been repeatedly ruled out leaving two major alternatives: #Prototaxites was either a #fungus or a now entirely extinct lineage.

The latter hypothesis seems more plausible based on nrw evidence.
