Fluvial System Block Diagrams
--
I was looking to understand a fluvial system the other day, up in the high Arctic, as I looked at 3DEP remote sensed elevation data… I have always been fascinated by the how geology, water, weather shapes a landscape, including erosion (aka geomorphology if you will) – and realized how very much value fluvial block diagrams have as we try to conceptualise what has, is and will happen(ed.)

I have been digging out my old copies of John McPhee's #books, dipping in, remembering what it was like to be a new #geologist, and how it has carried across into #spatial #data, #geomorphology, #geomorphometry, #hydrology, #landcover, #engineeringgeology, #environmentalscience, #landuse, #massmovement and so much more......
This one paragraph reminded me so strongly of that time,, although I cannot of course write as eloquently:
--
"I used to sit in class and listen to the terms come floating down the room like paper airplanes. Geology was called a descriptive science, and with its pitted outwash plains and drowned rivers, its hanging tributaries and starved coastlines, it was nothing if not descriptive. It was a fountain of metaphor—of isostatic adjustments and degraded channels, of angular unconformities and shifting divides, of rootless mountains and bitter lakes..."

'Some (TopoBathy) Floodplain Images I Made A Few Years Ago, On The Mississippi R.
--
These are some (topobathy) floodplain images I made a few years ago for a specific usecase – and ‘stumbled’ across them again today, lookin’ for something else…
Every time I look at such things, the (engineering) geologist, geomorphologist, (pseudo) hydrologist, spatial data scientist in me is made happy in being reminded what access we have to (often open) spatial data and the sheer volume of it, and the use cases for which it can be leveraged.
We are lucky professionals…

Work to stabilise the expanding sinkhole in Merthyr Tydfil is ongoing as Wales prepares itself for a weekend of storms.

Cranes have been brought in to stabilise the chasm on Nant Morlais in Pant, Merthyr Tydfil, which emerged on Sunday.

It has now grown to about 17ft (5.2m) wide and is believed to be as deep as 50ft (15.2m).

Footage from drones flying over the street show the Nant Morlais stream flowing through the gap.

Vortex Trapping Of Suspended Sand Grains Over Ripples

“KEY POINTS
• Observations of vortex-trapped grains suggest delayed settling of advected grains, as well as delayed advection of grains mobilized from the bed
• Quantitative comparisons of vortex-trapped sand grains compared well with theoretical formulations by Nielsen (1992, doi.org/10.1142/1269) for a forced vortex
• Improved understanding of vortex trapping effects on sediment dynamics may decrease uncertainty in large-scale coastal model predictions..."

This week's #NewBooks at the library: I chanced upon a very affordable copy of Atlas of Submarine Glacial Landforms from the #GeologicalSociety. A rare Dutch addition this week is De Thigmofiel by one of my favourite Dutch biologists, #MidasDekkers. Lastly, I offered sanctuary to a damaged copy of #Evolution and Fossil Record of African #Proboscidea from CRC Press

Daniel Coe’s Astonishing River Cartography

[those in the spatial hydrology ‘world’ have long been incredibly impressed by Dan Coe’s imagery and cartography, here is a wonderful article on cartography & science with his visual arts quality]
“Cartographer Daniel Coe uses relative elevation data, primarily from plane-mounted lasers called lidar, to visualize Earth’s natural features, like rivers and floodplains. His stunning river maps reveal stories hidden in historical sediment and past channels carved by the water, as it twists and turns through both landscape and time…”
