A' Chioch (mountain on left) and Beinn Fhada (right) in distance. #Mountains #Mull #Geology #Glaciation

John Faithfull 🌍🇪🇺🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🧡✊🏻✊🏿
Excellent visit earlier this week to Torosay Sand Limited's gravel quarry in eastern Mull. Most of the quarry consists of bedded gravel and sand deposited by glacial melt rivers around 16 to 15 thousand years ago when most of Scottish glacier ice melted away. But these are overlain by a couple of meters of grey till produced by local Mull glaciers during the "Loch Lomond Readvance" when ice grew again in western Scotland between about 13000 and 11700 years ago. #Geology #Glaciation #Mull

Richard Ashwell
Can we survive if the world's glaciers melt?

Deutsche Welle has made a short film that tries to answer the question: can we survive without glaciers? The answer is just about.

Casablanca and Dubai would be flooded. Mumbai would be under water. But humanity could find alternatives to #glaciers as water stores (more dams) and rivers as transport routes (more railways).

South-to-north migration would accelerate and expanding populations would have to co-exist on a shrunken landmass, but at 2 degrees of warming above pre-industrial levels people – and some #glaciers – would survive. At 5-8 degrees all #glaciation would be gone, including the #Greenland and #Antarctic #IceSheets. Undiscovered Scotland
Glen Roy's "parallel roads", north of Roybridge in Lochaber. Long held in folklore to be hunting paths used by the Celtic warrior Fingal, they actually mark different shore lines of a vast ancient loch created by glacial ice. Vicky Veritas
Clark’s Fork Canyon and River, Wyoming

“Massive mountain-front fold, basin sediments that were shed off of the rising mountains, moraines from glaciation, Precambrian igneous exposures, remote spectacular canyon, Clark’s Fork River with wild & scenic designation, history with escape route of Native Americans eluding the US Cavalry and a hike to a hidden waterfall. This is heaven for a geologist! It does not get any better. Even if you are not into geology, this spot is a good reason to visit Wyoming.”

I have it from an expert that if I traveled here in Southern Montana and looked south I would see the wonder of the the Great Plains laid out before me. This amazing person also helped build the bridge you see in the wild Clark’s Fork canyon over the Clark’s Fork River, which is the “the last wild river in America.” Also, I’ve learned the dropoff into the canyon is scary as hell. I’m a believer, and already a big fan of Wyoming geology. And I will see it for myself. Vicky Veritas
Snowball Earth

Through many posts we have talked about the Great Unconformity (yes, you must capitalize it) and how it occurs worldwide in different rock sections. Why? Scientists believe that at several times in Earth’s history the planet was buried in a blanket of ice. Oceans were nearly frozen. This is what scientists call Snowball Earth, or sometimes Slushball Earth.

The last occurred sometime before 650 million years ago, during the aptly named Cryogenian period. In 200 million years, uplift and the giant erosive conveyor belts of ice eroded continents down to the roots of the ancient mountains and left the land at sea level. Think the Canadian Shield. This scraped bare land is the base of the Great Unconformity. As the glaciers melted, sea level rose and covered the land and deposition of sedimentary layers began. Variations of this happened worldwide. We can focus on the North American continent which looked much different at that time. Forget anything west of Idaho or so. It wasn’t there yet.

Wyoming Geologist Myron Cook does a much better job than I could of explaining Snowball Earth, the Great Unconformity, and why different gaps, between hundreds of millions to billions of years of time, exist across what was North America at the time in his great video published only 11 days ago. Throw in a master-class in Deep Time, and you have it all put together as only a master story teller can. And there are lots of rocks, yay! Watch this wonderful video. Yes, it’s long, but you’ll absolutely hate yourself if you don’t get to see the Mineral Fork Tillite and how the story ends. Trust me.

https://youtu.be/LXzDfQyUlLg

Follow it up with further findings on Snowball earth using thermochronology by Kalin T.
