This Is My Glasgow<p>I spotted this sign outside the Arlington Bar on Woodlands Road in Glasgow yesterday, and it made me laugh. This Is My Glasgow<p>Love this Andy Capp mural on the First and Last on Maryhill Road in Glasgow. Opened in 1885, its name is derived from the fact it was the first bar reached when travelling towards Glasgow from Milngavie, and the last one before Milngavie when travelling the other way (since the intervening burgh of Bearsden traditionally lacked any pubs).</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/andycapp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>andycapp</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/mural" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mural</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/pub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pub</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/maryhill" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>maryhill</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>I've been regularly walking past the Buttery on Argyle Street in the Anderston area of Glasgow for almost a decade now, and only spotted this rather charming threshold mosaic for the first time today. I presume it dates from the time in the 1930s and 40s when it was home to pub called the Shandon Bells. This was one of three Glasgow bars owned by the publican Lawrence Brady, all of which bore this same name! </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/mosaic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mosaic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tiles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tiles</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tiling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tiling</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ceramics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ceramics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>Intriguingly, in the clouds above the ship is a spitfire, complete with RAF roundels. Given that this stained glass is purported to date from a refit of the bar in 1938, this seems to foreshadow the pivotal role the Queen Mary would come to play in World War II as a troop-carrier, starting just two years later in 1940.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/pub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pub</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/stainedglass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stainedglass</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/rmsqueenmary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rmsqueenmary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/stainedglassart" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stainedglassart</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/spitfire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>spitfire</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>While you can still just about make out its name along the front of the building where it once was, the Western Bar no longer exists and the site is now occupied by a branch of Greggs. In an ironic twist of fate, the Dowanhill Church in Hyndland, whose congregation were key players in the fight to keep Hyndland dry, is now home to the Cottiers Bar. </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/hyndland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hyndland</span></a>&nbsp;</p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>While the temperance movement managed to ensure Hyndland had no bars until the Rock opened, in the face of many protests, in 1966, the Partick Wine, Spirit and Beer Trade Defence Association helped ensure the residents of Partick always had plenty of choices of where to drink, a situation which continues right up until today. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/hyndland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hyndland</span></a>&nbsp;</p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The ghost signs on this wall on Peel Street in Glasgow reveal it was once home to the Western Bar, one of 44 pubs in the Partick area of the city in the 1930s. By contrast, the neighbouring area of Hyndland had none. The difference was due, in part, to the wonderfully named Partick Wine, Spirit and Beer Trade Defence Association, and its one-time president John Mossman, who ran the Western Bar in the early 1900s. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/hyndland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hyndland</span></a>&nbsp;</p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The Stumps on Peel Street in the Partick area of Glasgow. Formerly the Manhattan Bar, it got its current name in the 1990s from the nearby West of Scotland Cricket Ground. The most famous match ever played there took place in 1872, when Scotland played England in the world's first ever international football match. Watched by four thousand spectators, the match ended in a disappointing nil-nil draw.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/partick" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>partick</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/football" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>football</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/scottishfootball" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>scottishfootball</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The carved wooden sign outside the Bon Accord on North Street in Glasgow. Opening in 1971, it was one of the first real ale pubs in Glasgow and it remains so to this day. I'm not too sure when the sign dates from, but it's not present in a photo taken in 1991.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/pubsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pubsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/thebonaccord" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thebonaccord</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/bonaccord" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bonaccord</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The sign for The Aragon in the West End of Glasgow. Despite the appearance of this sign, it only opened in 1970, making it one of the newer pubs on Byres Road. This Is My Glasgow<p>Previously, this had been the site of a large house, constructed in the 1890s and occupied first by the artist Robert Young and then by George Young of the timber merchants Brownlee and Company. This Is My Glasgow<p>The Rock on Hyndland Road in Glasgow. Now a West End institution, when it was built in 1966, it was the first pub in the Hyndland area of the city, and its opening happened despite protests from local residents and the members of the church across the road (which, ironically, is now home to Cottiers, a bar and arts venue). </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/therock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>therock</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/hyndland" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hyndland</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowbuildings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowbuildings</span></a></p>
