fiona and marcOur route led us from Romania across the border to Serbia. In the first Serbian village, we found a well where we filled our water bottles and where we made a new friend, a super cute puppy. He came to us without any shyness. However, he was scared of the locals passing by. Unfortunately, we couldn't take him with us and had to say goodbye. In the friendly-looking town of Kikinda, we happened to ride through the so-called 'most beautiful street in Serbia'. It was really beautiful with the trees and their green, merging canopies. For sleeping, we chose a sports playground, which seemed to have not been used for active recreation for a long time. After the sun had set, 4 young owls even came to practice flying and feeding very close to our tent. fiona and marcNear Perushtitsa and ~15 km southwest of Plovdiv we pedaled across the attraction 'The Red Church' (Bulgarian: Червена църква, Chervena tsarkva. In the Internet we found out: The Red Church is a large partially preserved late Roman (early Byzantine) Christian basilica, dating to the late 5th–early 6th century. It is a rare example of solid brick construction in a church from Late Antiquity in Bulgaria, and it was the red colour of the bricks that gave the church its name. A number of researchers have suggested that its original name of a church was "Virgin Mary", due to the widespread cult of God's mother during the early Byzantine period... fiona and marcYesterday, we had to say goodbye to Severin and his girlfriend, Nina 😢 We really enjoyed having the 'kids' around us 🥰 Now, as our nice break on Lesvos slowly comes to an end, we are focusing on preparing for the next chapter of our journey... 🚵‍♀️ 🚵‍♂️ 🌍 Marc took care of maintaining and repairing our bicycles 🚲 🚲 changed a broken zipper (sewed it on by hand 🪡) on his frame bag and did a lot of computer 💻 work (in his preferred position: squatting 😅). Programming software for his phone 🤳 running Postmarket OS, chatting, and learning nights and days long with likeminded people of the Linux world 🐧 is what he is into the most. He also digitized parts of our handwritten journal and is still searching for stylesheet ressources to optimize the pandoc latex pipeline for our book project 📚 Fiona did a lot of photography editing 🪄, sold her Fujifilm camera 📷, and started to get used to her new Sony camera 🤩 She sewed 🪡 a zipper onto her hoodie to be more flexible while cycling, and beautified her cross-body bag with a colorful ribbon 💝 Both of us hate housework, but now we have to do some of these never-ending tasks 🤪 We share this work quite equally. In addition to the usual clothing, towel, and bedsheet washing the sleeping bags had their very first deep clean 😇 And again we cleaned the tent ⛺️ our pro tip: 1. soak it in salty seawater 🌊 to get rid of the cat-pee smell 2. rins it in the shower 🚿 A very important task is done as well 🥳: Fiona worked out our itinerary very precisely for the next three months 🗺️ Are you curious where we are heading next? fiona and marcDue to the rainstorm escapade from that morning, we didn't leave until late midday and because of the strong headwind, we didn't feel like biking at all... eventually we made it to Finike, took several coffee breaks in parks and went to a restaurant for dinner. In the dark we cycled aproximately 10km along the coastal road until we came to an abandoned beach bar, where we pitched our tent for the night... The next day of cycling was amazing! fiona and marcWe left Çıralı with its beautiful beach and the ancient site of 'Olympos' behind us and enjoyed a great day of cycling off the main road. Several kilometers before reaching the coastal town of Finike, we battled against the very strong headwind. It was no longer fun to ride, so we decided to look for a campsite. The weather forecast indicated that a terrible rain and thunderstorm will approach the next morning. Therefore, we searched for a sheltered campsite to avoid getting soaked... Yes, we found a roof under which we could set up the tent. The night was peaceful, the wind even stopped. And in the morning when we woke up, we thought the weather forecast had been overly dramatic... But suddenly it started to rain and then the storm began... coming directly from the sea, straight towards our small tent! OMG! The roof was no longer helping, the rain was coming horizontally. We feared that the storm would damage the tent, so we took it down while the rain soaked us... After about two hours enduring the storm, the wind suddenly shifted and 10 minutes later the dark rain clouds were swept away. The sky was once again bright blue, the sun was shining as if nothing had happened. Only the wind continued to blow like crazy. fiona and marcThe next morning at Mersin heavy rain surprised us. The sky over the sea was super dark black. The first bad weather wave we sat out in the tent, then, around midday, we decided to start cycling... Only some km later we where lucky to wait underneath a roof of a supermarket until the next cloudburst was over. To Erdemli, our destination for this day, we cycled mostly on the promenade directly along the coast or on the big road D400, totally easy 😎 At Erdemly we cooked dinner in the big and very clean city parc. fiona and marcIn Mersin we needed a chill-day. In the parc at the beach we relaxed without being disturbed from anybody. Right when we wanted to start pedaling some km in the afternoon, a man on a bicycle talked to us. A little later his friend, who knew very well german, joined us. We chatted together, met more of their cycling community and got invited to drink çay and eat fresh fish. fiona and marcOur route, the only existing road, led us all the way up into the mountains. Since we hadn't seen snow in a long time, it was kind of exciting. But the most amazing part of being there was smelling the cool, fresh air without air pollution from cars and trucks. Although it looked on the map like it should have been a big road, there was barely any traffic. When we arrived at the mountain pass (2250m), a very nice downhill awaited us. Wow, this was great 🤩 Around midday we reached Yüksekova, where we had lunch and bought a Turkish sim card. In the afternoon we cycled on with the idea of finding a nice campspot and finishing the cycling day early. It turned out to be super difficult to find a spot to pitch our tent. We cycled along the Nehil river. The land around the river was extremely wet and muddy, not a good idea to pitch the tent. Then the landscape changed from wide swampland and farm fields to a narrow valley with steep rocky mountains on both sides, also no possibility to pitch the tent. So we kept pedaling and pedaling. Finally, we saw a flat and grassy place 20m away from the road. We pushed the bikes up there when we suddenly realized we were being watched from the mountain peak. Armed military men shouted down to us 'yallah, yallah,' sounding like 'get your butt off here...' and that's what we did. We almost lost hope. Finally, we found a place where we saw no military posts or guards around and where we could set up a bivouac (no tent). fiona and marcContrary to our fears, the border crossing went very smooth. Of course we had to -still on the Iranian side - remove the bags from the bicycles and slide them through the x-ray scanner. At the passport and visa control, the officer tried to convince us that our visa had expired. 'No, that's not the case' we explained and showed him that he should not consider the time period for picking up the visa, but rather calculate 90 days from the date on the entry stamp. He kept the visas (for Iran it is on a separate paper, as some countries would refuse entry when having an iranian entry stamp in the passport) and gave us back our passports. In the next room, we were greeted in High German and immediately led to the next x-ray scanner. All the locals, with their worn bags, old suitcases, and dozens of plastic bags full of tomatoes, had to wait. We felt totally uncomfortable and so sorry when we saw how the Turkish border guards treated these people. As quickly as possible, we packed all the bags from the bike into the scanner and were then asked to push the entire bicycle through 🤣 Wow, we had never experienced anything like this before! - too bad we didn't have a photo of that! - then got the entry stamp and off we went... The first thing Fiona did, on turkish ground, was removing the headscarf 💁‍♀️ The temperature was quite chill up there and the snow was within reach. fiona and marcThe coastal road was narrow, in bad shape without any shoulder or possibility to escape from the danger but full of truck and passenger car traffic. It was horrible to cycle. So we decided to try to hitchhike. We were prepared to stand on the side of the road for a while. But, within less than ten minutes, several Iranians wanted to give us a ride. But they sadly had to accept that we don't fit in a tiny car. With the loaded bike, we only fit in an empty pickup or a little truck. A Nissan Patrol with some bikes on the roof passed by us, turned back, and stopped next to us. Four guys climbed out of the car. The driver introduced himself as the Iranian cycling champion. He and his friends are on bike holidays. We waved it off, saying our bikes wouldn't fit anywhere on top or in the car. They insisted. They really wanted to take us with them and they arranged to bring our loaded bikes somehow on the roof of the car. It was super crazy! And there we went, together with the funny group of four friends towards Bandar Charak. fiona and marc'Badgir', the so called Windcatcher are very impressive. Badgir are built like the traditional houses, from clay and straw. From all directions the wind get catched and brought down into the rooms, essentially a natural air conditioning system. In the little traditional village 'Laft' a lot of these Badgir are still visible.
