1. #Tekken8

Even though I picked up the basics in Tekken 7, I still began my Tekken8 journey hitting buttons more or less haphazardly to watch my character do cool things. But, partially because Tekken8 has good training tools, and partially because I was sick of watching fighting games from the outside, I pushed through, and it became less of a game, and more a spiritual journey of self-improvement.

2: #RimWorld

I’ve never played anything quite like RimWorld. It has the same basic tenants of a city builder, where you need to keep your people fed and happy as you accumulate wealth and expand, but the focus is much narrower, more personal. Instead of a metropolis, you have a handful of colonists.

The new paradigm makes mountains out of what was previously mole hills. If your cook gets sick, the whole colony is at risk of food poisoning or starving!

4. #Stellaris + DLC

Stellaris is #1 on the list of “Games I tell my semi-interested wife stories about”. It’s equal parts mechanical challenge and narrative generator, with a scope that feels as vast as your interstellar empire. Did I tell you about the time my people desperately took to the stars as their home world crumbled around them? About the arrogant empire whose only place for xenos was in zoos?

5. #MulletMadJack

Perform brutal kills to please the audience. Fail and die, their likes are your life. You have 10 seconds… 9… 8…

That premise is great satire of instant gratification culture, but it’s also a great setup for a unique FPS experience. 10 seconds isn’t enough time to hide in cover. Nor is it enough time for analysis or second guessing. For the minute or so each level lasts, you need to be a flow state murder machine.

6: #LastEpoch

Last Epoch is like Path of Exile for people that don’t want to do 8 hours of research before they start playing and there’s lots of smart design decisions that go into that. The biggest one is skill-trees for every skill instead of making one massive skill tree. This means that while the overall space of builds remains humongous, it’s much easier to find a reasonably effective way to use that skill you like.

My year in video gaming:

Finished #ChainedEchoes (my #GOTY2023) Didn't play much post credits, hoping for the DLC to catch me.

Tipped my toe into #Snowrunner: great game; gifted it to my dad who played through the campaign (I did not).

Abandoned #ApexLegends: It's been very fun 5 years 💜💜🪵

Slightly underwhelmed by the length of #PinballSpire 💜💜💔

Burned brain cycles in #TheCaseOfTheGoldenIdol: fantastic, quirky, challenging 💜💜💜

🏆 Completely obsessed with #DerailValley 💜💜💜

7: #UnicornOverlord

#Vanillaware’s previous game, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, felt like an absurd auteur gamble where every bet hit a jackpot. Unicorn Overlord feels like what happens when only some of those risky choices pay off.

The biggest success for me is the tactical combat, which is really in a league of its own. It takes some inspiration from Fire Emblem in the way that calculus takes “some inspiration” from algebra.

9: #KingOfFighters15 + DLC
Despite not having played any of the previous games, I immediately recognized #KOF15 as having an all star roster and fell in love with it. The characters are all super cool in vastly different ways. Want an iron-man dad with ridiculous mutton shops? A psychotic cannibal sexy secretary? A weeb mob boss with magic kung fu? The classic leather jacket hero with fiery rush down? KOF15 has all that and more in its 61(!) character roster.

#GOTY Honorable Mention: #LastTrainHome

In the aftermath of WW1, Czechoslovak soldiers make a desperate journey through the frozen fields of Siberia and the Russian Civil War. Their armored train odyssey is a founding myth of Czechoslovakia, and I was completely ignorant to all of this before playing Last Train Home.
