Read Ribbon Skirt by Cameron Mukwa this morning. It is a middle grade graphic novel about a two spirit kid who has faced discrimination at school. They rekindle a friendship over the summer and make a ribbon skirt to wear to the local pow wow. It was a lighthearted book showing friendship and respect. Highly recommend for the kidlets in your life.

I just finished reading Debbie Tung's lovely book, Quiet Girl In A Noisy World and absolutely loved it. I spent a lot of time reading a page and then saying things like, "I do that too" or "I've been there" and "That's me!" A wonderful book and I'll be looking for more of her work.

Lunar Boy by Jes and Cin Wibowo.

I picked up this book at the library. It was on the 'recently returned' pile next to the help desk. It's obviously a book for preteens yet the colours are gorgeous. Maybe I could use the pallettes for my own works.

Three hours later, I'm crying at its sadness and beauty, and I've bought my own copy.

Best graphic novel I've read this year.

Themes: Discovery, chosen family, queer identities, exploration of sexuality, love, boundaries, empathy, culture.

CW: Abandonment, heteronormativity, queerphobia.

15 years ago I did the artwork for this graphic novel, written by the Italian writer and jazz lover Andrea Campanella. It was a decent success and I even won an award for it.

A lot has happened since then, and I also grew a lot as an artist in the meantime. If I was to go back I'd definitely take different decisions, but that was 2010.

Next week, this book will come out as a revised, updated and hopefully improved version in Italy (published again by Tunué).
