The <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/Greens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greens</span></a> worked with the <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/Labor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Labor</span></a> govt to improve the <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a> to include extra money for <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/SocialHousing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialHousing</span></a>. I can find the details if you are particularly interested. Also, what the <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/Greens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greens</span></a> have currently done is to delay a vote on the shared equity in housing bill to allow the <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/Labor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Labor</span></a> govt more time to consider negotiating a better solution. As you can see below, <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/AdamBandt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AdamBandt</span></a> is happy with the community feedback so far. </p><p>"in fact, it’s exasperatingly familiar to anyone who followed the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) standoff (sub out former housing minister Julie Collins for replacement Clare O’Neil, though it’s clear Albanese plays a driving role). After several excruciating months, Labor gave a few inches, insisting it had nothing to do with Greens demands, at which point the minor party agreed to pass the bill."</p>
John Quiggin<p>TIL that Albanese's Housing Australia Future Fund <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a> has yet to build a single house or even (AFAICT) approve a project. If Labor had just spent $500m/year directly out of the budget, instead of this byzantine shuffle to keep the project off-budget, we could have had 000s of houses built by now</p>

John Quiggin<p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Mandate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mandate</span></a> theory explains why <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Albo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Albo</span></a> messed up the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Voice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Voice</span></a> referendum. Albanese genuinely believes that having a majority in the House of Representatives implies that the majority of people have endorsed Labor's policies, and that they will therefore reject anyone who doesn't go along. </p><p>Hence, he assumed Dutton would have no choice but to support Voice. Similar story with Greens and <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a>. Disastrous miscalculation in both cases <a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a></p>
John Quiggin<p>The <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a> was Albanese <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Labor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Labor</span></a>'s biggest single program, spending $500 million a year. The Greens extracted $3 billion more over (I think) 3 years, tripling the size of the program <a href="https://insidestory.org.au/two-cheers-for-the-haff/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">insidestory.org.au/two-cheers-</span><span class="invisible">for-the-haff/</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a></p>

SimpleProgrammer<p>I reckon there's an opportunity to save the <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a> here: dictate that the HAFF is the primary investor in this shared-capital scheme, buying houses with first home buyers.</p><p>This would mean HAFF can directly invest in housing (what the Greens want) and be speculative (what the ALP wants).</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/ALPNationalConference" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ALPNationalConference</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/housing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>housing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-08-18/rent-to-buy-housing-scheme-explained/102743694?utm_source=abc_news_app&amp;utm_medium=content_shared&amp;utm_campaign=abc_news_app&amp;utm_content=other" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">abc.net.au/news/2023-08-18/ren</span><span class="invisible">t-to-buy-housing-scheme-explained/102743694?utm_source=abc_news_app&amp;utm_medium=content_shared&amp;utm_campaign=abc_news_app&amp;utm_content=other</span></a></p>
Paul<p>With the Federal government chipping in another $3 billion, to go with the earlier $2 billion, to help the states with housing we now have an additional $5 billion since the Greens voted down the HAFF</p><p>That's the equivalent of 10 years of funding from the fund </p><p>Can anyone seriously argue the Greens didn't make the right call?</p><p><a href="https://theblower.au/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a> <a href="https://theblower.au/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a></p>

John Quiggin<p>Hard to describe how depressed I am feeling about <a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a> right now. </p><p>The <a href="https://aus.social/tags/VoiceReferendum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VoiceReferendum</span></a> was always going to be a longshot because referendums usually fail. But <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Albo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Albo</span></a>'s refusal to put forward a model, and the promotion of someone as abrasive as Noel Pearson as a leading advocate have ensured a defeat so bad that the fallback of option of a legislated Voice is unlikely.</p><p>In economic terms, Australians will be worse off by the next election than when Labor was elected - lower real wages, higher unemployment, higher interest rates, a more regressive tax system.</p><p>The fact things would have been even worse under the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/LNP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LNP</span></a> doesn't cheer me up</p><p>And just to make the picture complete, the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Greens" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greens</span></a> are overplaying their hand on housing. Should let <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a> through now, and pocket a win with the $2 billion.</p>
Pat Hudson Cartoons<p>More bang for your buck</p><p>A cartoon by me</p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/auspol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>auspol</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/AustralianPolitics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AustralianPolitics</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/haff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>haff</span></a></p>
John Quiggin<p>If $2 billion for housing is genuinely new (or at least much more than anticipated from Housing Accord), I'd say Greens can and should claim credit for pushing <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Albo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Albo</span></a> to it, and let <a href="https://aus.social/tags/HAFF" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HAFF</span></a> through</p>
