mk30<p>So 'ohi'a lehua (cornerstone species on this island, sick with rapid 'ohi'a death, slow-growing, dominant canopy tree at my place) is known to be quite difficult to propagate.</p><p>They produce loads of tiny, airborne seeds, but they kind of need to land in the right medium to take off.</p><p>An ag person who has grown it before once recommended that I do a little pot of soil, top it with living moss, and sprinkle a lot of seeds on top of the moss. I did it one year, 0 sprouts.</p><p>Interestingly, as I was taking apart a rotten roof section yesterday, I noticed that one of the rotting 2x4's had loads of 'ohi'a seedlings growing with orchids in little pockets of moss that were growing on the side of the wood. 10 feet in the air!</p><p>I left them all on the wood and set it down in a shady spot. Unfortunately pig came last night and turned it over, but I turned it back up in the morning. I hope these little guys go! I would love to have a way to propagate 'ohi'a!!!</p><p>Pic 1 shows the largest seedling on the 2x4, and pics 2 and 3 show the other moss/orchid clumps with smaller seedlings. Pic 4 shows the entire 2x4 on the ground, while it was still attached to the roof section. You can see the moss clumps on the side of it.</p><p><a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/plants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>plants</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/hawaii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hawaii</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/ohia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ohia</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/propagation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>propagation</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a> <a href="https://regenerate.social/tags/forest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>forest</span></a></p>
