Would I be better replacing the screen (again) & installing #linux on my current laptop, or getting a second hand macbook?

I'm current on Windows 11 on an Asus Zenbook Duo with:
11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7.
16.0 GB ram.

I love that my current laptop has a 2nd mini screen, it is very useful for me.
It does seem to get very hot since the screen was changed last time - but it is also 4 years old.

I don't like Apple stuff but a friend said it's much more powerful.

Lenovo ThinkPad P14s mobile workstation with AMD Strix Point coming soon

The Lenovo ThinkPad P14s is a mobile workstation-class laptop that combines powerful hardware with a relatively compact design. Last year Lenovo introduced 5th-gen models with Intel and AMD processor options, and now it looks like the company is getting ready to bring a big performance boost with the new ThinkPad P14s Gen 6 series.

While Lenovo hasn’t officially launched a new model yet, […]

Linux 6.15 RC2 released!

Linux 6.15 RC2 has been released for developers and curious users to try out. All the interesting changes from performance improvements to bug fixes. Spectre RSB mitigation cleanups for AMD and Intel processors, various graphics driver fixes, and all other important fixes for different kernel components.

In the release announcement for this version of the kernel, Linus Torvalds said:

It's Sunday, just barely afternoon, and I've pushed out the rc2 tag.

Things look fairly normal. Yes, this was a larger-than-usual merge window, but at least for now rc2 looks pretty much in line with normal statistics both when it comes to number of commits and to the diffstat. Nothing particularly stands out to me, but it's early in the release yet, so let's see how it goes...

About a quarter of the patch is selftests updates, which is perhaps a bit unusual but at the same time certainly not alarming.

Other than that, it's all pretty evenly spread out: drivers (gpu is about half of that), arch updates, core kernel and networking,
filesystems, documentation. A little something for everybody, in other words.

Why not try out this awesome pre-release of Linux 6.15?

Was könnt ihr dazu sagen?? Gerne auch teilen damit ich paar mehr Kommentare bekomme :ablobcatheart:

Framework stops selling some laptops in the US in response to tariffs

Modular, repairable computer maker Framework has announced it’s “temporarily pausing” the sales of some laptops in the United States in response to global tariffs that recently took effect. Specifically, customers in the US can no longer order an entry-level Framework Laptop 13 with an Intel Core Ultra 125H or AMD Ryzen 5 7640U processor. Higher-priced configurations are still available.

Linux 6.15 RC1 released!

As we’ve predicted, Linux 6.15 RC1 has been released for developers and curious users to try out. All the interesting changes from performance improvements to more hardware support, such as MacBook Touch Bar support, exFAT file deletion performance improvements, and memory management improvements, have been landed to this version of Linux, alongside initial support for Copilot PCs, including the ASUS Zenbook A14.

In the release announcement for this version of the kernel, Linus Torvalds said:

It’s been two weeks, and the merge window is now over.

As expected, this was one of the bigger merge windows, almost certainly just because we had some pent-up development due to the previous releases being impacted by the holiday season.

That said, while it’s bigger than normal, it’s not some kind of record-breaking thing: we’ve had bigger releases, although not many. The really big releases tend to be due to some long-running major development being finally merged after many years, and this is not that: this is just the “regular” kind of big.

It’s big in both number of commits and in lines changed. The stats look fairly normal, with – once again – another AMD GPU register header file drop adding a ton of lines and standing out. But while that is a big chunk in itself, it doesn’t dominate the diff – there’s a lot of changes all over.

As always, below is the high-level “this is what I merged” view, which gives a flavor of what’s been going on, although it’s obviously colored by how certain subsystems send in their development in more digestible and separate chunks, while other subsystems are less granular. So while it gives some idea of what’s been going on, you’d need to look at the git tree to drill down into the particulars.

But at a high level it all looks very normal, with two thirds of the patch being driver updates, and the rest being a fairly random mix of the usual architecture updates, filesystems, core kernel (scheduling, timers, MM, networking), and misc infrastructucture (devicetree bindings, more rust infrastructure, zstd update, you name it).

Let’s hope that despite the fairly sizable drop of new code, this release ends up going as smoothly as the previous ones.

It’s indeed sizable as he put it, because there were lots of interesting changes being done to support more hardware while improving core parts of the kernel, especially when it comes to CPU scheduling and timers.

Why not try out this awesome pre-release of Linux 6.15, which will be released in under 2 months?

Talking with the folks in the local #vintage / #retrocomputing community, they clued me in that the #ThinkPad #RAID is a steaming pile of 💩 and not worth the trouble.

🤷 Oh well. Thanks for cluing me in

So I swapped out the two testing #NVMe drives I was using and reinstalled the original sticks - to have #windoz10 demanding for the #bitlocker recovery key. 🤦‍♂️

Well, time to wipe & install #windoz11 then.

Install went fine, only 4 rando #drivers to find for all #devices to be recognized and working.

Using my #CTT scripts to install the majority of applications, then to remove the #spyware #bloatware and other garbage #micro$oft added to #windows11

Then migrate my #data from my other ThinkPad. Welcome to my #sunday #funday

I started using Linux back in January or February 2020, and my first distro was Elementary OS 5.1. It felt like the right choice from the start.

Since then, I've tried a bunch of other distros like Arch, Fedora, Alpine, Linux Mint, Manjaro, and Paldo. But in the end, I fell in love with Debian stable.

Arch and Fedora didn't really sit with me, but I might give Arch another shot someday. Out of all the ones I tried, my top picks are Debian, Elementary, Mint, Alpine, and Paldo.

Today, I run Elementary alongside Debian on my laptop, and Debian on both my desktops. I love what Elementary does, but for me, Debian is number one, and Elementary is a close second.
