@AFWorld steping beyond rhetorical contrasts, I think focusing too much on mediocracy / meritocracy risks missing the point.

I like meritocracy — I’ve seen the difference.

In Russia in 2025, it coexists with mediocracy: in the military sphere, it’s meritocracy (corrupt officials are jailed), while in the civilian realm, everything is still distributed through connections or loyalty.

That’s why I see both #meritocracy and #mediocracy as tools of social reinforcement.

May 1st is a great day to write about #meritocracy.

I'm glad I’m encountering such ideas at an age when I can critique them rather than accept them blindly, even if the ideas seem appealing.

Meritocracy preaches that success and a high position depend on a person's abilities and achievements, not on money or connections. But in life, everyone starts from a different point, and that makes real meritocracy... practically impossible??

I'm shortly going to be attending a webinar, and had advance thoughts:

DEI practices are 100% about hiring based on merit. They require us to account for systemic barriers and identify and control our unconscious bias *so that* we can identify and hire the best person.

That the best person is not always (or often) a complacent white male is not a result of DEI. Speaking as a white guy to other white men: It's time to level up.

Commerce Secretary #HowardLutnick has “divested” his control over his firm #CantorFitzgerald by naming his two 20 something year old nepo baby sons to run one of america’s larger investment banks (and possibly the world’s largest provider of banking services for criminals and rogue nuclear states, because Cantor manages assets for #Tether).

welcome to the #meritocracy.

#MAGA#DOGE#uspol

I can't take credit for this concept, since I found it elsewhere... BUT:

If you are proudly #MAGA and you used your status as a military #veteran to get additional consideration for the job you now have? My sibling in crust, you are what they call "a #DEI hire." Your proclaimed status as a member of a protected class got you preference over other job applicants who were just as qualified as you. If you have any scruples at all, quit your job and go find another one without disclosing that you served in the military. After all, YOU think we should live in a pure #meritocracy, right?

When a growth mindset environment emerges, “equality happens”.

Carol Dweck tells a story of a Chicago high school that distributed “Not Yet” grades instead of failing grades.
Carol Dweck relates the power of “yet”: When students see the word "yet", they build confidence to continue and persist with their learning, making mistakes and working from them.

"What makes the ‘#growth mentality’ so appealing, Carol Dweck discovered, is that it creates a passion for learning rather than this thirst for approval. Its hallmark is the belief that human qualities like intelligence and creativity, and even relational capacities like love and friendship, can be cultivated through effort and practice. Not only are people with this mindset not discouraged by failure, they don't actually see themselves as failures in these situations, they see themselves as learners."
