MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in labor history April 28, 1789: Fletcher Christian led a group of mutineers against the brutal Captain Bligh on the HMS Bounty. Christian began the voyage as the captain’s mate, but Bligh appointed him acting Lieutenant during the voyage. The story of the voyage and mutiny was later retold by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall in their novel “Mutiny on the Bounty.” After their successful mutiny, Christian, 9 other mutineers, 6 Tahitian men and 11 Tahitian women, started a colony on the South Pacific Island of Pitcairn. However, when the mutineers tried to enslave them, the Tahitians rebelled and killed most of them. But not until after many of the Tahitian women became pregnant. The decedents of the mutineers and the Tahitians continue to live there today. Bligh had previously served on the Resolution, as Master, under Captain Cook, on his second and third voyages to Hawaii. And he was present when the native Hawaiians killed Cook.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/colonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>colonialism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/hawaii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hawaii</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/indigenous" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>indigenous</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/HistoricalFiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoricalFiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/novel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>novel</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/novel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>novel</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History April 26, 1649: The English authorities sentenced Robert Lockier to be shot for leading a mutiny. Cromwell’s New Model Army had just defeated Charles I in the English Civil War. However, the Army failed to negotiate a settlement with the King. And when Charles I double-crossed them, they executed him. A conflict arose between the monarchists, who wanted another king, and Cromwell, who wanted a plutocratic Parliament. Then there were the Levellers, who wanted a democracy in which every male head of household had a vote, regardless of whether he owned property. And the Diggers (AKA the True Levellers), who wanted universal suffrage AND common ownership of the land. Lockier was a Leveller and a member the New Model Army. On April 24, he and some other soldiers barricaded themselves in a Leveller meeting place in London. They demanded to paid their overdue wages. Cromwell ended the mutiny after a few days and arrested Lockier as the ringleader.</p><p>The Diggers originally called themselves the True Levellers, to distinguish themselves from the more moderate Levellers. However, in April, 1649, they began pulling down enclosures (common lands usurped by the landlords) on St. George’s Hill. And when they started planting the land in common, for the benefit of all peasants, people started calling them Diggers. Needless to say, the local landlords were peeved. They asked the New Model Army to come in and remove the Diggers. However, their commander told the landlords to use the courts. So, the landlords organized gangs to beat and burn out the Diggers. Ultimately, the court ruled that the Army could evict the Diggers if they did not leave. So, they left. But they started new commons in neighboring regions. </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn31l2idKTA" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=xn31l2idKT</span><span class="invisible">A</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/diggers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diggers</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Cromwell" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cromwell</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/levellors" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>levellors</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/CivilWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CivilWar</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/england" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>england</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/NewModelArmy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NewModelArmy</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BillyBragg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BillyBragg</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today In Labor History April 9, 1930: The IWW organized the 1700-member crew of the Leviathan, the world’s largest ship. Originally a German passenger ship, the U.S. seized it in 1917, during World War I, when it was docked in New York harbor. The U.S. subsequently used it to transport its troops to Europe. In September, 1918, the Leviathan left New Jersey, filled with men dying from Influenza. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History March 9, 1841: The U.S. Supreme Court issued a ruling that freed the remaining 35 survivors of the Amistad mutiny. In 1839, Portuguese slave traders had illegally transported 52 Mende people from west Africa to Cuba, on the Amistad, in violation of European treaties against the slave trade. Joseph Cinque led his fellow captive Africans in a mutiny, killing the cook and captain, and forcing the remaining crew to return them to Africa. The crew tricked them and sailed up the Atlantic coast, presuming they would be intercepted by the U.S. Navy, which captured the ship near Montauk, Long Island. President Martin Van Buren wanted to send the prisoners back to Spanish authorities in Cuba to stand trial for mutiny. However, the Court recognized the mutineers’ rights as free citizens. Abolitionists raised funds for the mutineers’ defense. Former President John Quincy Adams, who opposed slavery, represented them in court.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/amistad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>amistad</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/cinque" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cinque</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SCOTUS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SCOTUS</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/abolition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abolition</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/johnquincyadams" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>johnquincyadams</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BlackMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackMastodon</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History January 26, 1808: Soldiers took over New South Wales, Australia, during the Rum Rebellion. It was Australia’s only military coup. At the time, NSW was a British penal colony. William Bligh was governor of the territory. This was the same William Bligh who was an officer under Captain Cook when he attempted to kidnap the King of Hawai’i. He was also the same William Bligh who was overthrown in the Mutiny on the Bounty, in 1789. It is questionable why the British thought he’d do better in charge of a bunch of prisoners and unruly soldiers, than he did with a bunch of sailors. Perhaps they were just desperate. One of Bligh’s commissions was to reign in the Rum Corps, which held a monopoly on the illegal rum trade in Australia. They also controlled the sale of other commodities. Bligh started to enforce penalties for the illegal sale and importation of liquor. He also tried to provide relief to farmers, suffering from recent flooding and price-gouging by the Rum Corps, by providing provisions from the colony’s stores. The monopolists didn’t like his looting of the stores, from which they were profiting handsomely, nor his enforcement of the liquor laws. So, they arrested him and deported him to Hobart, Van Diemen’s Land. The military remained in control of NSW until 1810.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/hawaii" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hawaii</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/captaincook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>captaincook</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/williambligh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>williambligh</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/bounty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bounty</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/australia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>australia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/colonialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>colonialism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/rum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rum</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/rebellion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rebellion</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/novel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>novel</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/tasmania" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tasmania</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>

The mutiny started on August 23, 1917, when a cop dragged an African American woman from her home and arrested her for drunkenness. A black soldier asked what was going on and was beaten and arrested, too. When Cpl. Charles Baltimore, an MP, found out, he went to the police station to investigate. He was beaten, too, then shot at as they chased him away. Rumors reached the military base that the cops had killed Baltimore and that a white mob was approaching. So, soldiers armed themselves and marched into town. A riot ensued in which 16 whites died, including 5 cops. 4 black soldiers also died. The army held three courts-martial in the wake of the mutiny. They found 110 African American soldiers guilty. 19 were executed in total, 13 on December 11. 63 more received life sentences in federal prison. No white civilians were brought to trial. </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/houston" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>houston</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/blacklivesmatter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blacklivesmatter</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Riot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Riot</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/courtmartial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>courtmartial</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/prison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prison</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/hanging" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hanging</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lynching" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lynching</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/police" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>police</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/policebrutality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>policebrutality</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/policemurder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>policemurder</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/injustice" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>injustice</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/civilrights" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>civilrights</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/blm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blm</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/texas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>texas</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/houston" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>houston</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BlackMastadon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackMastadon</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History November 21, 1910: Sailors on board Brazil's warships mutinied in what is now known as the Revolta da Chibata (Revolt of the Lash). The sailors, who were mostly Afro-Brazilian, were protesting the use of whips by white naval officers when punishing them. Nearly half of the 4,000 sailors on these ships participated in the mutiny. Several officers who attempted to resist were killed. The rebels sent a telegraph to the president, reading "We do not want the return of the chibata [lash]. They threatened to destroy the city if the President of the republic and the Minister of the Navy didn’t cede to their demands. And they fired on army forts around Guanabara Bay, and at the naval arsenal and bases on Ilha das Cobras and Villegagnon Island, as well as the presidential palace. Ultimately, the Brazilian government granted an amnesty for the mutineers and the conflict ended without further violence. However, as soon as the mutineers came ashore, the government disarmed the ships, to prevent any further mutinies, and most of the men were discharged from the navy.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/brazil" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>brazil</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sailor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sailor</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/revolt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolt</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/uprising" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uprising</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BlackMastadon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BlackMastadon</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History November 3, 1918: The German Revolution of 1918–19 began when 40,000 sailors took over the port in Kiel, in the wake of the Wilhelmshaven mutiny, a few days earlier. In less than two weeks, it brought down the German empire, forcing all the monarchs to abdicate. They created a republic, led by the moderate Social Democrats, who vowed to implement modest reforms, including women’s suffrage and the eight-hour work day. The far-left socialists, however, wanted to create a republic led by workers’ councils. At the end of the year, violence erupted between the two groups over a dispute about sailors’ pay, killing 67. This led to the Communist Spartacist Uprising, led by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, and the Bavarian Soviet. The Social Democrats enlisted the Freikorps to help them suppress the uprisings against its authority, resulting in another 200 deaths. The Freikorps was composed of right-wing veterans of World War One, many of whom went on to become members of the Nazi Party.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/germany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>germany</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/socialism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>socialism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/berlin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>berlin</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/bavaria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bavaria</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/rosaluxemburg" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rosaluxemburg</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nazi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nazi</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History October 29, 1918: Wilhelmshaven sailors’ mutiny in Germany. Soldiers and workers brought public and military institutions under their control. They demanded the release of the imprisoned, an end to World War I, and the improvement of food provisions. By November 4, Kiel was firmly in the hands of 40,000 rebellious sailors, soldiers and workers, as was Wilhelmshaven two days later. Workers across Germany elected workers' and soldiers' councils modeled after the Soviets of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and took over military and civil powers in many cities. These events triggered the German Revolution of 1918-1919, which ended the German empire and established the Weimar Republic. </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Revolution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Revolution</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/uprising" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uprising</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/germany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>germany</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/soviet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>soviet</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/kiel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>kiel</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/russia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>russia</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/wwi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wwi</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/communism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communism</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History August 25, 1775: Two thousand Liverpool seamen ignored the reading of the Riot Act to free nine of their fellow workers who had been imprisoned for wrecking a ship after being paid short wages. Over 2,000 surrounded the prison. It turned into a full-on revolt, with workers de-rigging all the ships in port, making them unable to sail, and levying money from local merchants. After several demonstrators were killed at the Liverpool Exchange, they raided warehouses and gunsmiths for arms and seized two cannons from a whaling vessel, with which they bombarded the Liverpool Town Hall. At the time, there were 3,000 unemployed seamen in Liverpool and wages had been slashed by 33% as a consequence of the American Revolution and decline in the slave trade that came with it. They had begun their protest peacefully, cutting down rigging and marching, unarmed, on the Town Hall. The merchants, however, had hired armed thugs, who gunned down protesters without provocation, killing up to seven, provoking the sailors to seize arms and cannons, and fire on the Town Hall. The government sent in troops who eventually quashed the rebellion, arresting 40-60 sailors. Only 12 were indicted and all were released after agreeing to enlist in the navy.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/liverpool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>liverpool</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/uk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uk</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sailor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sailor</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mutiny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mutiny</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/uprising" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>uprising</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/revolt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolt</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/protest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>protest</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/riot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>riot</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/slavery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>slavery</span></a></p>
