When I try to explain how it works with no ads to folks accustomed to advertiser-based corporate media, I compare the #Fediverse to PBS -- paid for by donations, but without the 20-minute subscription drives offering DVD sets and the #MasterpieceTheater heat-changing mugs.

And yet the same people who complain they are seeing too many annoying ads on Facebook etc, still keep refusing to come here and just try it out.

I just don't get why they resist their desired change so adamantly.

The other night, my spouse was watching an old television program on one of the ad-supported “free” streaming services, and I saw my first television advertisement in many many years. It was nothing like the television ads I remember.

For those of you who are the proverbial frogs in the proverbial pot, especially if you are someone who always has a TV running in the background, you may not have noticed the dramatic change. You should know that modern television ads really have ramped up the techniques for emotional manipulation, from their soundtracks to their cinematography. As I watched the ad, I was astounded at how blatant the attempts at manipulation were, and so much of what is wrong with US society suddenly made sense to me.

This experience validated for me the wisdom of my long-term avoidance of advertising.

Be free. Avoid advertising.

😞 Disappointed this bigoted, harassing review is still on itchio. We reported it back in March.

It's about our charity's #free prosocial healthy relationship video game for teens called HONEYMOON. 💑

❗The reviewer defames us for "indoctrinating children" because it's free for educators & parents.

❗Player autonomy seems to frighten the bigot because the game allows for same-sex relationships. (New update will include non-binary.) 👬 👭 👫

❗The abusive partner in the game can be female OR male but the bigot claims "misandry"?

❤️ See for yourself -- play in your browser right now. Free. No ads.

[PLS LEAVE A NICE REVIEW! 🧡]

Honestly, I'm surprised that Microsoft has waited this long. Overcharging us for substandard products is clearly not creating enough profit for their shareholders.

Buying new technologies so they can suppress them isn't cheap, remember.

I try to avoid technical explanations. Those tend to put people off & scare them away.

Coming from the publishing industry, I use the analogy of how publishing used to be controlled by big corporations, but now self publishing has made it possible for anyone to control their own work. In doing so, publishing has become much more democratic.

Similarly, the #Fediverse has made social media much more democratic, also.

"Coming from corporate social medias like Twitter and Facebook, it’s often hard to understand the power of the Ordinary Person here in the Fediverse. Anyone–and I mean ANYONE–can set up their own instance here. Non-tech-savvy admins have proudly announced they’ve done so."

By the very nature of the lack of ads on #Mastodon, the experience here is more positive. My feed is not stacked with ads & posts that don't interest me. Plus:

#NoAds = No algorithm = No trolls & less divisivion

#Federation also makes for better admins.

@leighms @mastodonusercount

There is no algorithm here, throwing posts (and trolls) in your face, like there is on the commercial social media platforms. What you see is 100% dependent upon:
* what you RT, and
* which accounts & hashtags you follow.

(Yes, you CAN follow hashtags here.)

There is no algorithm to know you want to see more posts about a topic like crochet, unless you follow crochet accounts and/or follow the hashtag #crochet. So there can be thousands of crochet posts you will never see.

Be sure to follow @FediTips@social.growyourown.services and the group @feditips@a.gup.pe for great info about how to maximize your time on #Mastodon and see more feed you enjoy.

15 million users in the Fediverse, now.

No ad-blocker needed.
Zero ads.
My data stays on my server.
Interactions are genuine, driven by people's desire, not an algorithm pushing for conflict to boost engagement (and ad sales).
Nobody's here just because it's trendy. If you're here, you want to be here.
The best social media experience I've had in years.

Thank you to all of you, among these 15 million accounts, who have helped make this a wonderful place to be.

As a young father I wanted to have handy way to forecast clothing sizes for my son and I am very happy to announce the release of "Next Size – Kids Clothing" for iOS: apps.apple.com/app/next-size-k

I have put a lot of effort and care into all the details. I hope it shows and is a pleasure to use as well as being useful.

Let me know what you think and boosts are of course welcome!

My thinking is that posts which are actually ads could be sent to accts in #TheFediverse. With the use of #AI, Fedi accts that #Meta's data mining have collected, can have a post written & tagged w/ our account name. We would see it in our regular alerts, like any toot from any friend or other acct.

Because it would show up in our normal alerts, there would be no way to filter out #spam (like we filter it out in emails).

Product #ads could be mass-posted to social media similarly to how junk emails are sent out-- the company keeps a list of account names for various products, then posts the ad with a custom address tag in each.

I don't know that #Threads or anyone else would do that, but it seems possible for them to do so eventually. Of course, if a small server did it, they would quickly get defederated & blocked. But Meta being so huge, that might be less likely to happen.
