"Earth’s atmosphere is made up of different gases, mainly nitrogen and oxygen. The color of an aurora depends on the type of gas involved and how high up the collision occurs.

Aurora displays can occur at heights between approximately 80 and 500 km (50–311 miles) above Earth’s surface.

This also affects the colors that we see in the sky."

I’ve spent hundreds of nights watching the aurora in Alaska, but this night at Angel Rocks is still burned into my memory. I hiked up at sunset, found a spot on a rocky outcrop, and waited — and when the lights came, they came fast. One of the brightest, most intense aurora I’ve ever seen, racing across the sky and lighting up the whole valley below.

Had some very interesting space weather last night that culminated into an INCREDIBLE show outside of Fairbanks AK last night. These auroral rays that we are seeing here with the greens down low, the reds above it, then purples and hints of blue are reaching nearly 600km straight up into the upper reaches of our ionosphere.

View from my driveway tonight. With these auroral bands, you have a maximum level of energy that is stored in the earths magnetic field. When these maximum levels are reached, it creates a breakup, or otherwise known as a corona. Where the magnetic bands swirl and break apart, releasing the concentrated energy into a more broad, mist like auroral haze.
But for those few minutes of eye watering wonder, it’s quite a good time.
