Name-brand drugs in high demand for weight loss and diabetes are showing positive effects on #osteoarthritis. This physician lays out the current research and the promising future, in which #arthritis of the joints, common with #aging and linked to #obesity, could become far more treatable without joint-replacement surgery, which is no minor procedure, and which does not always go well.

Wise & Well · Can Weight Loss Drugs Help Osteoarthritis Sufferers?By Stephen Schimpff MD, MACP

"Of course, there are many types of exercise that are good for health, though cycling seems to have a leg up when it comes to protecting joints.

...

"The study, which was funded in part by the #NationalInstitutesOfHealth, and published in the American College of Sports Medicine's flagship peer-reviewed journal, included about 2,600 men and women, with an average age of 64 years old.”

Since starting on meds for #ADHD I've struggled less with chronic fatigue. Noticeably less. This means I've been able to be more active. I started slow with walks and doing my physio. Today I went for skates for the first time in almost 10yrs. It was so much fun. Plus it is a form of low impact exercise that's great for #osteoarthritis according to my research. Unlike a gym or pool membership it's a one off expense and can be done almost anywhere.

So after 10 sessions of physical therapy. I can conclude it definitely helps. My hip no longer clunks and it takes a lot more stairs before my knee bothers me. I'm still terrified of squats but I've learned to do them against a wall. Now we wait and see if my insurance grants me any more visits. #Osteoarthritis

It seems the cure for all my back, hip, and knee issues is:

Exercise (a lot) more
Eat a Mediterranean diet.
Sleep more
Drink less alcohol

I have to do it or I won't be able to function in a few years so I should be looking pretty in shape by the end of Sumner.

Dancing and crochet are also not contraindicated, so that's good.

And although painful, it's just wear and tear and not something scary underlying thing.

Every cloud and all that.

I had an exceptionally good day.

Steroid shots in the facets at C3/C4 & C4/C5 and.. it helped! Fingers crossed it lasts more than a few days.

Chronic pain is exhausting, debilitating, and generally a f**cking pain in the ass.

I also got really GREAT news at work AND had packages for me when I got home.

All done in the sweet rain of Sitka. 🥰 😍 🤩

Here are my Mother's Day flowers for your pleasure.

Chronic neck pain update:

Had the epidural steroids in my neck. That was pretty trippy. 😜 But not bad!

The Doc said I probably have joint pain that will need to be treated with ablation (burning nerves away) and he's right. I woke up to my left side pain gone, but the "bone spur right side" still screaming at me.

It's amazing what hoops you need to jump thru with insurance just to get what you need in the end.

Looking for story ideas on the subject of #rheumatology. New studies, clinical studies (not mouse or cell studies); new important guideline changes -- that sort of thing. Things that would be relevant to Canadian family docs. Could be nutrition, cross-specialty, pediatric or adult, new findings that are out-of-class, #epidemiology... lots of possibilities. Not so interested in 1 drug vs placebo studies -- something more interesting.

I've been told something strange today by a podiatrist: I'll never walk without pain again. Ever.

I have very aggressive arthritis in all my joints and it's in my foot, a place where they can't fuse. The moveable part on the outside.

I have shoe recommendations and that's it.

Fellow pain suffers - you have my empathy. I see you and I feel you.

I'll be replacing a knee this summer, so that will help, but the foot...that's forever.

Osteoarthritis Breakthrough: New Therapeutic Approach Discovered
Advancements in understanding the disease could bring about a paradigm shift.
Researchers have discovered that elevated levels of the protein c-Fos are associated with osteoarthritis severity, providing new insights into potential targeted therapies. Osteoarthritis, a debilitating joint disease affecting over 500 million globally, may be significantly influenced by this protein.

For a long time, osteoarthritis was believed to stem from wear and tear in our later years. However, recent research increasingly connects the breakdown of cartilage to inflammatory and metabolic activities within the joi

1. I got a cortisone injection in my knee yesterday in ANC at the best Orthos in the state. For the first time in several years, I am pain free in my knee/shin/foot. Seriously, I could cry.

2. I had Covid for the first time ever. Huge fan of Paxlovid. I know I got it from a cruise ship tourist who came into my office. Ugh.

3. We are heading to Yellowstone and then a Bluegrass Fest in Grand Targhee next week. My pictures, they will be a 'changin'.
