This is the latest in a string of self-inflicted wounds by the new admin that are squandering America’s strength & threatening our #NationalSecurity. Firing hundreds of #FederalWorkers charged w/protecting our nation’s #nuclear weapons is also #dumb. So is shutting down efforts to fight #pandemics just as a deadly #Ebola outbreak is spreading in Africa. When a pandemic occurs, a hard lockdown is an obvious and effective way to stop it. However, lockdowns come with serious societal issues. For example, during COVID-19, a critical mass of people opposing lockdowns coalesced in Britain. This was mainly due to two demographic groups, namely self-employed people, who were concerned about their own economic losses, and parents, who dreaded the prospect of having to be closed in the same home with their own kids. Seeking validation and trying to promote their own personal interests, these people became main spreaders of disinformation, eventually falling prey of state-sponsored populistic and anti-science propaganda machines.

In this study, we show that one can use optimization and control theory to introduce only light travel restrictions between macroareas, such as states or regions within a country, yielding better final results in terms of infections and economic damage than those that were actually obtained at the time.

Good health is a temporary privilege. Some people get to enjoy it for most of their lives. Others for a shorter time, or not at all. If you're healthy now, and it's *possible for you to mask up to protect others, but you don't, you're either an asshole, or a short-sighted fool.

Even if there *weren't* another pandemic starting, if you live long enough, your health will deteriorate so you'll need others to protect you. If you don't help normalize that behavior today, why do you expect other people will take care of you when you need it?

*Acquiring masks won't keep you from eating or paying rent.

I'm looking for recommendations for a respirator that's easy to put on and take off a face with long hair and glasses. Specs I need:

* N95 or better
* Protected filter housing; not adjacent to skin
* Adjustable fit
* Minimally restrictive air intake, or enough sealed space to feel air moving on my skin
* Not valved
* Available in US

Preferred:
* Not disposable

My concerns, in case you're aware of something that addresses them, without necessarily fitting the specs.

Duck-billed disposable N95s (3Ms V-flex) seem to address the anxiety restricted airflow triggers in me after about 30 minutes in an oval shaped N95. They also sit right on my skin, so when a hot flash makes my face sweaty, that triggers concerns & anxiety that the sweat may be compromising the integrity of the mask.

I have a valved P100 that's comfortable enough, but is a) a production to put on and take off, and b) doesn't protect other people from me.

I have a pointy European nose, which doesn't fit properly inside most masks made for the Asian market.

Got any recommendations?

Something I notice in this report (and in most others on the subjecti) is that there is almost no mention of the role of factory farms in the the spread of H5N1. While these large operations may provide economies of scale, they also increase risks to animal and human health.
