"Great Replacement Theory, or the idea that White Christians are being outperformed demographically by non-Whites, threatening the survival of the race and 'civilization,' was central to Fascist ideologies and practices and it is central to anti-immigrant and other racist platforms of far-right parties and governments today."

~ Ruth Ben-Ghiat

Writing from her vantage point of growing up in rural Missouri and Arkansas, marrying at 18, becoming pregnant at 19 — "I couldn’t order a beer, but I could change a diaper" — and delivering a baby at 20, Jess Piper casts a cold eye on the pronatalist policies proposed by the Trump regime.

It's no accident, Piper says, that the folks most gung ho re: pronatalism are those rabidly opposing abortion but welcoming child brides.

This is the most absurd false dichotomy.

"Should humankind continue? If the answer is yes, then we’re already dealing in the realm of pronatalism, where the good of childbearing is taken for granted—and differences in approaches would likely come down to policy particulars. But if the answer is no, then all of politics is moot anyhow."

On a finite planet, overpopulation is just as likely to wipe us out as underpopulation.

The Atlantic · Why the Left Should Embrace PronatalismBy Elizabeth Bruenig

"Historians may one day reflect on the open concubinage at the end of America’s experiment with liberal democracy, and what it revealed about the disruption characteristic of our era: the compromise of the right’s typical defense of traditional families by the Nietzscheans of Silicon Valley, in favor of having children for quantity’s sake."

They want America to have more babies. Is this their moment?

There are discussions across the political spectrum about birth rate decline and what it means for the economy.

One response to this decline is a cause that's been taken up by the right, and it has a name – Pronatalism. Many of its advocates met up recently in Austin, Texas, at "Natal Con."

"This is mass eugenics, social darwinism, all based on racism. It’s not 'humanity' Musk and DOGE are worried about, they’re worried about white men losing their dominance.

We’re looking at evil, square in the face, men marinated in a closed loop of white supremacy who have convinced themselves that they should literally play god with the rest of us….."

Jim Stewartson comments on how curious it is, viewed from one standpoint, that Elon Musk is ranting about humanity dying and pronatalism, since:

"You would think that this paranoia about 'humanity dying' would mean Musk and DOGE would try to save as many lives as possible. Nevertheless:"

MindWar: The Psychological War on Democracy · The Big White Lie: “Humanity Is Dying”By Jim Stewartson

I read recently that procedures in #Michigan are being refused for tubal ligation & similar type reproductive surgeries by one of the biggest healthcare providers in the state, a Catholic one.

A reminder that teaching hospitals who receive largely state funding or private funding are often taking patients, and in the case of #Wisconsin, one such school is getting women in within 2-3 weeks.

I've been trying to polish my understand of fascism a bit and found this nice podcast to help with that:

Fifteen Minutes of Fascism

1. Definition: soundcloud.com/user-627234964/

2. The pseudo-ethics of forest protection: soundcloud.com/user-627234964/

3. More overviews soundcloud.com/user-627234964/

4. Ecofascism & pronatalism soundcloud.com/user-627234964/

These episodes are relevant to what I often get back to (in this 🧵 for example). My science background makes me think of the material and ecological aspects of what's going on in the world, and science is about models, not about discrete stories (cases). This is why I've considered "ecofascism" to be a useful model to study a repeating pattern that goes much further back than a century ago; before protofascism, more like "paleofascism".

I'm neither pro nor anti-natalism since I have deep misgivings about both, but I will say that the biggest practical concern is pro-natalism and also the 'pro-natalism for me but anti-natalism for thee' crowd. There isn't now, nor has there ever been, a significantly large number of people who believe in universal anti-natalism. It's just not a thing. It's not a meaningful political threat.

Russian lawmakers on Tuesday voted to ban the advocacy of child-free lifestyles, in a move that is part of a broader effort by the Kremlin to reverse a falling birthrate and promote the country as a bastion of traditional values that is battling a decadent West.

The State Duma, or lower house of Parliament, unanimously approved a bill that would ban any form of “propaganda” promoting the “refusal to have children.”
