Today's historic photo of the day: With a special LVR long weekend tour train from Sydney to Gwabegar and Dubbo sitting at the platform, we see a streetside view of the #railway station at Coonabarabran, NSW, January 30 1983.

Note the classic NSWR roundel nameboard affixed to the front of the station. It seems almost comically misshapen with the horizontal bar wide enough to fit the long name almost 3 times the diameter of the disc.

Interior space of a main railway station building in Novi Sad, Serbia, built in 1964. On 1 November 2024, the concrete canopy (not seen in the photo) of the recently renovated station collapsed onto the busy pavement below, killing 16 people and severely injuring one more.

The collapse spawned a series of mass protests in Novi Sad, which then spread throughout Serbia, fueled by dissatisfaction with other issues including government corruption and media censorship.

This is the Powderhall branch line of the Edinburgh and Leith Railway, the last part still in existence. It's been unused for almost a decade. (The other lines were dismantled long ago, but many can still be followed as cycle routes like Warriston Path.)

I took the photo from the bridge where the line crosses the Water of Leith, close to Redbraes Park. Gaps in the fence on either side allow you to cross the bridge on foot, and are even marked on OpenStreetMap! @Gaelan and I found the spot while wandering last autumn.

I love how Edinburgh contains so many hidden places, even in otherwise relatively built-up, populous areas. It's a place that rewards exploration.
