EarthActivistTraining.org Magic for Challenging Times with Starhawk April 16th to May 21st ,2025 Six Sessions, 5:30 to 7:30 PM Pacific Starts this Wednesday, April 16 Participants in this series will learn and hone a variety of the skills needed to create a sustaining personal practice as well as craft and lead rituals in a wide variety of settings. In addition, we’ll explore how we can weave magic into secular situations to help create deeper bonds of connection, enhanced solidarity, and the ability to face repression with confidence and courage. Magic, according to occultist Dion Fortune, is “the art of changing consciousness at will.” That’s a definition that can serve for meditation, personal growth, or political change—and never have we needed magic more! The tools of magic and ritual can deepen our awareness, enhance our consciousness, create a sense of belonging and help us face together those things that are too hard to face alone. They can help us stay grounded and sane in the midst of chaos, design actions and ceremonies that unite our communities in this time of stress and fear, process our grief and despair, and strengthen our will to create a world of justice and compassion. Also seriously exciting is this new paper from @zhgarfield with Sheina Lew-Levy on leadership and transmission of 'opaque culture' (read #ritual #secret knowledge) in 23 'egalitarian' hunter-gatherer groups

This is the major type of teaching that matters with #huntergatherers. I will take a good look at whether these are truly GENDER egalitarian groups. That is basically determined by women's ritual secret knowledge and performance of ritual action.

The authors show that among egalitarian foragers, influential individuals often pass on these norms, hinting at a possible relationship between leadership and cooperative teaching.

Where have all the menstrual huts gone? was the question posed by US archaeologist Patricia Galloway in the late 90s. She wondered why there was so much ethnographic evidence for historic and current menstrual observances among SE Native American groups (eg Chickasaw, Creek, Choctaw), and yet archaeology scarcely identified ‘menstrual seclusion’ sites. Menstrual taboos, she realised, often associated with matriliny and matrilocality rather than patriarchal societies. She said: ‘Because Western societies practice the hiding of menstruation…the topic itself is treated with reticence by females, discomfited derision by males, and with pollution anxieties ...by both’.

Members of the Menstrual Hut Coalition will be leading open discussion about the past, present and future of menstrual huts, drawing on recent experience in London to reclaim women’s time/space at Dark Moon. We can learn from Indigenous cosmologies of how these space/times can move whole communities between worlds and usher ‘World Renewal’. People of all genders welcome, as we are thinking about gender interactive celebrations.

"From February 28 to March 2, hundreds of #abolitionists and #anarchists from across the country converged in Gainesville for the first Florida Abolitionist Gathering (#FAG). Across a passionate weekend of #workshops, films, food, #debate, #ritual, and #protest, the contours of a robust regional #resistance movement came into focus.

"The #intergenerational, heavily #queer and #trans, and strongly multi-issue and anarchist group of abolitionists that converged in Florida articulated an expansive vision of #liberation anchored in the urgent need to dismantle the #PrisonIndustrial complex in all its manifestations. The gathering showed that even as liberals wring their hands about the death of democracy, scrappy groups of organizers continue to fight back—and sometimes win—deep within the belly of the beast."
