This is where I was sitting on a bus stop bench, waiting for the bus yesterday. This is a four-lane arterial #highway running straight through what is otherwise a purely residential neighborhood. The curb height here is maybe 3-4", and the sidewalk is maybe 36-48" wide (less so in front of the bench), with no shoulder whatsoever, no barrier at all to protect anyone from 50-plus mph motor vehicles veering off the roadway. #California #BayArea #SanMateoCounty #urbanism #transit #insanity #BanCars

This is yet another example of how once you get outside of San Francisco, it's a total gay wasteland until you get to at least Palo Alto, if not all the way to San Jose.
There are a great many gay doctors in San Francisco and some in San Jose, but everywhere in between? Nada. None. Zilch.
And the big health networks like Sutter absolutely do not make it a priority to recruit for culturally responsive care.
Dammit, my gay doctor is retiring, and now I have to find another doctor who isn't going to get visibly uncomfortable around me again, who I don't have to drive an hour to see.

Madia elegans - The Common Madia
Found in meadows and at the edge of oak woodlands from Baja California del Norte to Washington state.
It has a long blooming season, from early spring to late summer, and provides one of the few sources of pollen for insects in the dry, hot California summer. The stems and leaves are covered in resinous glands with a sweet pine-sap smell.

Today I dusted off my nikon d40 modified for #infrared #photography. This is the Pulgas #Water #Temple in #SanMateoCounty. It is a monument at the terminus of the Hetch Hetchy water pipeline which provides drinking water from #Yosemite to #SanFrancisco.

*Calochortus luteus* - Yellow Mariposa Lily, found in heavy clay soils in the Bay Area, Sierra foothills, and the inner coast ranges of Central California.
The plant dies back to a dormant bulb during the hottest part of the year, only to re-emerge when the winter rains come. The plant takes 2-4 years of growth before it actually flowers.
The bulbs are edible, and are frequently eaten by invasive pigs and other grazing animals. The best places to see them are in open grasslands without a recent history of grazing. These photos were taken at Edgewood Preserve in San Mateo County.
Bulbs are seasonally available from native nurseries, and are easy to grow if you have the patience.
