Will Australia protect the NT savannas?

"Despite the tremendous ecological values of the NT savannas, they are insufficiently protected and increasingly threatened. Against a global backdrop of calls for greater conservation efforts and outcomes, national commitments to a ‘Nature Positive’ economy and no new extinctions, and the critical priority to constrain climate change, the rate and scale of destruction of our savannas is escalating. Our biodiversity—and the fabric, function, health and potential of the land—is being jeopardised."

Entonces, what even is a grassy biome? Here, it is broadly defined as an ecosystem with a continuous herbaceous (green) layer across a landscape. This includes grasslands (which have no trees, like prairies), savannas (a few trees), and woodlands (whew, many trees).

Observing multiple drivers and processes in a savanna from space. Savannas have a distinct seasonality with alternating dry and wet seasons. They have a continuous layer of grass with sporadic woody cover. The grass layer provides fuel for extensive fires that coincide with the dry season, and there is widespread herbivory from grazing and browsing animals. Savannas are also subject to human activity such as livestock rearing by pastoral nomads, cropland expansion, and fuelwood harvesting. The illustrated satellites exemplify the main types of Earth observation systems that have been used to study savannas at large scales.
