Although it may appear that #bumblebees have only two wings they actually have four.
The smaller rear wings are attached to the larger front wings by ‘hooks’.
Bumblebee wings are part of the exoskeleton.

#CDC reports 216 #children died this #flu season, the most in 15 years

The deaths surpassed last year's total of 207, & are the highest number since the 2009-2010 H1N1 swine flu pandemic.

It’s startling that the number already is this high, given that the flu season is still going on. The final #pediatric #death tally for the 2023-2024 flu season wasn’t counted until autumn.

See Where Federal Dollars Flow to #Universities Around the Country
NYTimes, use a cartogram and a beeswarm chart to show how funding is distributed, based on data from the National Center for #Science and #Engineering Statistics.
In fiscal year 2023 alone, roughly $60 billion flowed from the federal government to universities in all 50 states, funding research on an array of topics, like cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and rare isotope beams.

Continued thread

I'm still turning over the election results from Monday over in my head, but one thing I am not right now is comfortable. The CPC got over 40% of the popular vote running on a platform of policies very similar to the ones being enacted right now in the USA. Polievre was going to cut most funding of basic research in Canada. I can't even begin to explain how disasterous that would have been for Canada.

"Basic research is a public good: it generates real benefits, but those benefits can’t be monetized because everyone can make use of the knowledge gained. So government support is the only way to sustain science."

open.substack.comMAGA’s War on ScienceWhy do these people believe that ignorance is strength?

Watching arsonists burn the US scientific forest to the ground is painful and awful.

nsf.gov/policies/document/indi

Half the economic growth of the US since World War II was fueled by basic, unapplied, curiosity-driven research. What will power the economy of the future when this fuel is spent?

This is a rhetorical question.

NSF - National Science FoundationPolicy Notice: Implementation of Standard 15% Indirect Cost Rate

"Earlier this week, NSF leadership also introduced a new policy directing staff members to screen grant proposals for 'topics or activities that may not be in alignment with agency priorities'. Proposals judged not 'in alignment' must be returned to the applicants by NSF employees. The policy has not been made public but was described in documents seen by Nature."
