Ekrany (Screens), akryl na płótnie, 120 × 100 cm, 2022.

In this painting, I wanted to explore two themes. On one hand, I aimed to juxtapose three types of "framed images" - in the background, there's a window revealing an overexposed image, next to it, an actual painting on canvas in darkness, and in the foreground, two glowing screens. Through this composition, I wanted to highlight the distinct characteristics of these three image types (a meta-painting commentary).

The second theme I wanted to address is the presence of technology in everyday life. In my paintings, I have explored the visual representation of life with computers and in the virtual world. I concluded that the best way to illustrate this was by showing technology's impact on our surroundings and bodies. The painting depicts my brother's computer setup from a few years ago. I remember it with nostalgia. Back then, my brother used two refurbished monitors and a computer that he later gave me when he upgraded to a better one. On the desk, there’s a pair of headphones - the same model we kept buying for years out of habit until they stopped making them. All of those headphones met the same fate - ending up with a broken plug that we couldn't fix because, after replacing it, only one side would work. My brother cut off all those cables and kept them "for later." "Later" came a few years ago when I started exploring technology-related themes in my art. I began attending events with a few of my favorite (headphones) cables tied around my waist as a belt.

I saw a snippet of this display on one of my follows, then I saw one on a podcast.

So of course I wanted one.
Took me a while to google-fu them, it's a #Vestaboard 22x6 electromechanical wall display.
About the size of a medium TV.
These retail for, sit down for the price...

....U$5200

A new sign of a #tech affluence.

Semi-permanence in a digital world of constant change.

So of course, my first thought was... Fuck it, will make one with hookers and blow...

...and blow you will need, individual characters sell for $250.

oh wow this is fun, #Screens for #iPadOS (i also use it on #macOS) has that Screens Connect feature but they also added a #tailscale integration so you get a populated list of your assets in a tailnet. everything in here will be commandeered by your private encrypted backplane.

if you're new to my #householdIT, i use tailscale to bridge two house nets. when i'm out here in PHL, i can still access the filers/media and household #AI back in iowa city. sweet!

also to facilitate cute #automations.

"Tandem OLED screens, like the one on the M4 iPad Pro, have two layers of red, green, and blue (RGB) organic light-emitting layers stacked atop one another and are driven in tandem. [...] The primary benefits are less burn-in risk, less power consumption, and the potential for higher brightness levels."

Apple to unveil iPhone 16 and ‘Apple Intelligence’ AI features

Apple is slated to unveil its latest iPhone and a slew of other new hardware on Monday during its biggest product launch event of the year.

The event, held at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, features the tagline
“It’s Glowtime”
with the company’s logo surrounded by a colorful aura.

New #colors for the iPhone and other Apple products are rumored to be coming.

In the lead-up to the event, reports around Apple switching from LCD to #OLED #screens,
and rumors of a dedicated photo button circulated widely.

Early coverage of the event also predicted that the tech giant would expand on its AI “#Apple #Intelligence” features.

Earlier this year at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the company announced a range of ways that it intended to integrate AI features into its products and services.

One of the biggest reveals was a partnership with #OpenAI to merge #ChatGPT technology with Apple’s #Siri voice assistant,
with executives promising a more “natural” mode of interaction.

🔴 📖 🖥️ The smell of paper or the shine of a screen? Students’ reading comprehension, text processing, and attitudes when reading on paper and screen

Our results reveal that, overall, the students performed better when reading on paper compared to on screen, which parallels existing findings highlighted in our literature review. Yet, examining single-student performance revealed that some performed equally well across both modes, and one student comprehended better with screen reading.

And in other news, a critical analysis of Jonathan #Haidt 's #AnxiousGeneration that questions his methods and conclusions in his anti-screens manifesto:

Again, the simple binary " #screens or not" fails to account for the wide range of other behaviors that affect a child's wellbeing.

My young kids have high #screentime by anyone's metric, but their other hours are stuffed with enriching, positive activities that actively build their minds, bodies, and hearts.

Stop children using #smartphones until they are 13, says French report

"The hard-hitting report said #children needed to be protected from the #tech industry’s profit-driven “strategy of capturing children’s #attention, using all forms of #cognitive bias to shut children away on their #screens, control them, re-engage them and #monetise them”. [...] “We want [the industry] to know we’ve seen what they’re doing and we won’t let them get away with it.”"

The Guardian · Stop children using smartphones until they are 13, says French reportBy Angelique Chrisafis

For decades I’ve intermittently discussed and occasionally engaged with research projects about #font #legibility in different media and from different readers’ PoVs.

I may just have turned up a new factor we never considered.  Someone who’s perfectly able to read phone-sized lines of #text on #screens , has done so most of their life, but not a paper letter from the 1970s, neatly typed in Pica 10.

(Like I struggled with copperplate at that age?)

Maybe there’s an issue to be explored here?

Also, shout outs to #intro #screens for #apps that allow you to either quickly jump back into something previously or open a create dialogue for new images. I can't stress how much small #ux tweaks and shortcuts can greatly improve the editing experience.

Nothing feels worse than having to open menus and clicking options one too many times. You want to get up and going, quickly, and I feel like that is becoming more of the case for more #FLOSS software than just #GIMP.
