We selectively extract #levoglucosan and its isomers from complex matrices, such as #sediments, for quantification by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS)!

[#ScienceNews on #Mars] The #ChemCam instrument installed on NASA's #Curiosity rover has identified the presence of #manganese in particularly high concentrations within #rocks that dot the floor of the #Gale crater.

This discovery shows that these #sediments were formed in a river, a delta or near the shore of an ancient lake. It raises questions about #oxydation processes on Mars... and reinforces the hypothesis of past #habitability...

The climate phenomenon, which originates in the tropical Pacific and occurs in intervals of a few years will shape weather across the planet for the next year or more and give rise to various climatic extremes. El Niño-like conditions can also occur on longer time scales of decades or centuries. This has been shown to have occurred in the recent past by an international research team led by Ana Prohaska of the University of Copenhagen and Dirk Sachse of the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). Their analysis of biomarkers – organic molecules or molecular fossils from vascular plants – in the sediments of a lake in the Philippines indicates an unusually dry phase in the region during the Little Ice Age between 1600 and 1900 A.D. The results have now been published in the journal Communications Earth and Environment. They show how important the understanding of past dynamics of the tropical Pacific ocean-atmosphere climate is for the improvement of climate models and the prediction of future climate changes.

Not #Today but an every day phenomenon...the wastes we produce end up in places we do not expect.

A recent-ish outing to help kids understand the connection between the natural environment and the materials we use and dispose.

The #shoreline of the Columbia #River provide a useful exposure to wastes tossed locally and wastes that have travelled and been deposited.

Primary wastes found include cigarette butts and broken glass/bottle caps...of local origin, along with #microplastics, #plastic and #Styrofoam that have likely been transported before #deposition in #shoreline #sediments.
