@kkarhan @ownohmanny @derPUPE The #Guardian has a nice article on #ShippingContainer #housing. Apparently, they are slightly ahead in cost if things are kept basic:

"[...] cost savings begin to disappear as soon as you start playing around with containers’ basic structure, try to meld units together, or do anything fancy with stacking arrangements."

@kkarhan @ownohmanny @derPUPE I'm no expert on #ShippingContainer #housing, but you might underestimate the cost of containers even when bought.

Attached graph is from a small feasability study: sustain.wwu.edu/files/2021-08/

Dutch Keetwonen actually set up a production line in China, which manufactured the container units for 20,000€ each. Final cost apparently was about 38,000€ per place.

German #EBA51 actually cost 13.5 million € for 235 units, or 57,500€ each.

@ownohmanny @kkarhan @derPUPE It's not only that it's low standard. #ShippingContainer #housing is actually expensive. That's why you won't see it as a default. My former town, #Maintal, did a study in 2015 on how to house 50 people on short notice. Building new houses was about 32,000€ (steelframe or woodframe #prefab) to 34,000€ (for a solid house) per place. Renting containers for 5 years was 10,000€ per place. Big advantage of container housing is quick and temporary.

@kkarhan @derPUPE I get the #solarpunk vibe of #ShippingContainer #housing. But I don't think they are practical. Bad heat insulation. Noisy. High carbon footprint. Not that great longevity. Bad for mobility impaired folks due to lack of escalators. Harder to self-customize compared to other materials.

Funding and prioritizing housing co-ops imho creates better results. Like the Danish #andelsboligforening: da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andelsbo

I go on with another favorite #youtube-channel of mine:

#Vancouver based #architect Daniel Titchener designs small spaces as offices.

Anyone can apply to get a #design done via video and I think, he comes up with great solutions and #inspiration for the viewers.

His latest design is that of a #space, just half the size of a #ShippingContainer - without a #window 😮

InvidiousDaniel TitchenerLess but better.

When we first aquired a #shippingcontainer it was for a mega daft project in 2014 called March of the Robots.
It was a Roving Robot Lab. With a STEAM PUNK time travelling artist/maker in residence - Stephen Reid (Minecraft/3D Printing)
We travelled to places in Leeds, with the RobotLab, visiting people, hearing their stories about where they lived and what used to be made there. We collected parts for a giant 'Iron Man' Style Robot to be made on Light Night with artist Mark Haig.
