#Karstmas day 4

For today, enjoy this image of a 586 ft (179 m) single pitch, put yer rack on and go, pit in the US. It's called Fantastic, and it really is! It is the longest cave rappel in the lower 48. (Alaska has one that beats it!)

The day we went it was high water, and as you can see there is a massive waterfall. Wind created by the falling water in the pit whipped it around, constantly shifting where it was landing. The rig is out of the water for safety reasons, but the bottom 200 ft we were getting soaked by spray nonetheless.

This is a lightpainted image, my partner (the dark spot on rope) and I communicated via radio as I directed where & when to paint with a very bright (1000+ lumen) light as I opened and closed the shutter as needed. As high as he looks in the image, he is only 200ft above me. There is another 400ft above him...notice the waterfall disappears before the pinpoint of light at the top. The waterfall faded, too small to see.

Remember I talked about rope weight on day 2? Rope also stretches some, even the super-static* kind we use. In 600 feet, this is not a negligible amount, there's about 10 feet of stretch that I had to 'climb' before I got off the ground. In that process, the wind in the pit shifted *whomp* shoving me down slamming my back onto the cobbles. *ouch* Twas a painful climb after that, with an epic bruise to show for it!

So. You'd better enjoy this photo! I suffered for it! :boost_requested:

*For those curious, cave rope of choice for things like this in the US is PMI Pit Rope Max Wear, which has elongation at 300 lbf of only 1.8%.

Twenty years ago, @mbroome and I joined our rope team, Extreme Rappels, for our first Bridge Day rappel (bridgedayrappel.com/). We've since gone on to longer and deeper drops - Fantastic! Golondrinas! El Cap! - but we keep heading back to WV almost every year to free rappel 850 feet to the river's edge below.

Rain or shine, cold or fucking freezing - there is no "warm" at this point in the day! - we get up at 0-dark-30, make our way to the bridge, and walk out the maintenance catwalk suspended under the roadbed. There is no other experience quite like walking along a 3' wide metal walkway with open metal railings on each side as the ground drops away underneath, til you're out on the W plate hundreds of feet in the air and it's time to put your weight in your harness, trust the gear and your own competence, and unclip that final safety tether.

We had a glorious bluebird day Saturday... Almost *too* gorgeous. I neglected to strip off my base layers before we started up the 700' ascent ropes, and the sun was blazing hot as soon as we cleared the treeline! But the views were incredible, and I'll take dripping sweat over pissing rain any day.

Every year it gets a little more expensive, and the logistics get a little more annoying, and I wonder if maybe we've done this often enough. And every year we go anyway, and it's *always* worthwhile. The friends, the views, the workout on the way up, the ride on the way down...

*Using Tero, will try others too. Thx for boosts & recs 💖

Long shot i suppose but does anyone have experience with subtitle software? Don't want anything fancy, just something to simplify the timings. (Text and video already exist and I want .srt files so I can turn them on or off.)
I've found some to try but have also read so much AI and marketing spiel nonsense along the way I'm feeling uneasy about the whole thing. TIA. Mac preferred.

I started “Smell Retraining Therapy” #SRT today as recommended by my doctor. I have progressive loss of smell and taste after repeated sinusitis and viral infections in the past few years. Several times per day, I sniff multiple essential oils: Eucalyptus, clove, sweet orange and peppermint. I sniff and try to remember each smell. Olfactory nerves can regrow! I’ll let you know how it goes over the next three months. 👃
