The Duirinish Stone was NOT erected thousands of years ago. Set in a concrete base, it stands approximately 5m high and was erected by hand. That is to say it was pulled up the hill and set in place by human power. See the ALT for more information…
A view from the ’Two Churches Walk.near Dunvegan. Healaval Mhor* is the flat topped hill in the distance.
* sometimes called MacLeod’s Table North
A little bit of a mystery for #StandingStoneSunday
We had a sunny visit to see John Bell's Stone in the grounds of Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire today. A tall standing stone said to be erected as a memorial in 1617. But is that just when the top was added to a prehistoric standing stone? Balgorkar stone circle is just 650m away and this stone really would not be out of place as a flanker there.
Morning folks, to celebrate losing an hour of my #StandingStoneSunday, here's Standard Street or Great Oak Road standing stone, near the lovely town of Crickhowell in South Wales. Standing over 6 feet tall, it's marked by the OS as a boundary stone but must surely be Bronze Age.
This visit April 2012.
At #Carnac some years back. Magical place.
My #StandingStoneSunday has got a hole in it.
Men-An-Tol from many moons ago.
Carreg y Big near Llynau Cregennan, between Cader Idris and the Afon Mawddach for today's #StandingStoneSunday
This area is rich with stones, cairns and hillforts, as well as being an incredibly beautiful landscape.

Revisiting the memorial stone of the ‘last woman burned as a witch’ in Scotland in film and archival photos. La menhir de la Thiemblais, an impressively carved and decorated 8 metre long granite standing stone, which lies at a precarious 45 degree angle, and located east of St-Samson-sur-Rance, near Dinan in the Côtes-d'Armor département in northern Brittany.
There are a number of legends attached to this stone, one of which is that it’s one of three menhirs blocking the entrance to hell…
And another from Carnac - standing stone alignments at Kerlescan, Morbihan, Brittany.

The Géant standing stone (#menhir) at Saint-Goustan, Auray, Morbihan, Brittany. Part of the Carnac group of #neolithic sites. Magical place.
Mên Scryfa (the Stone with Writing) - 1.8m inscribed menhir which stands in a field about 300m from Mên-an-Tol. The inscription reads "Rialobrani Cunovali fili" (Rialobranus son of Cunovalus). Rialobran (or Ryalvran) may be Cornish for "royal raven".
Urban prehistory for today's #StandingStoneSunday offering. Maen Llwyd now stands in a quiet cul-de-sac in a Machynlleth housing estate. It's a chunky stone, possibly volcanic.
This visit September 2011 in pouring rain.
A rainy, windy day outside, and a rainy day offering for today's #StandingStoneSunday
Waun Fach standing stone, a chunky, tapering stone in a fairly low-lying area not far from the coast near the village of Llanegryn, in the Dysynni valley, Gwynedd.
Visited in the rain, September 2011. Portrait, may need a click.
