julian<p><strong>tl;dr — how do PieFed/Lemmy/Mbin handle cross-posting?</strong></p> <p>Currently, when a NodeBB admin <em>moves</em> a topic from the uncategorized pseudo-category into a local category, we federate out an <code>as:Announce</code>, people typically think of that as a "boost" or "share".</p> <p>That worked fine when the entirety of the category list was your local categories plus the "uncategorized" pseudo-category. However, now that NodeBB is moving towards supporting remote categories (via group actors), this UX makes less sense. We wouldn't want to "move" a topic out of the category it is supposed to be in, just for visibility to other local users. Additionally, topic moving was limited to administrators, and from the get-go we knew it would eventually cause issues because people other than admins would want to share topics to other local users.</p> <p>This is where the "cross-post" functionality comes in, which is entirely new to NodeBB. I don't think this is new to other AP-enabled threaded discussion software. The idea would be that if a new topic comes in, whether it's uncategorized or not, any user could "cross-post" that topic to a local category, where it would be visible to other users on that instance. On the ActivityPub side, we would then federate out an <code>as:Announce</code> as we already do.</p> <p>Is this what PieFed/Lemmy/Mbin already do, if they support cross-posting? What other alternative solutions would there be to this problem?</p> <p>cc <a href="https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@rimu" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@rimu@mastodon.nzoss.nz</a> <a href="https://piefed.social/u/andrew_s" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@andrew_s@piefed.social</a> <a href="https://lemmy.ml/u/nutomic" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@nutomic@lemmy.ml</a> @bentigorlich@wehavecookies.social</p>

Jerry on Mastodon<p>There are many <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Friendica" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Friendica</span></a> fans, and for good reason. Once you get past the learning curve from the difficult UI, you get to appreciate the extra benefits of built-in <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Bluesky" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Bluesky</span></a>, <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Lemmy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Lemmy</span></a>/#Piefed/#MBIN, <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Tumblr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tumblr</span></a>, and <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/RSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RSS</span></a> feed integration. It also has <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Diasporia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Diasporia</span></a> integration and some other protocol integrations. Of course, it's also a <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> alternative.</p><p>Nobody ever mentions Friendica as being a <a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Threadiverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Threadiverse</span></a> app, but it has Groups, which is built-in Threadiverse capability. If you follow a Community on Lemmy/Piefed/MBIN, for example, it gets categorized as a group and is placed into a separate section for the groups you are part of. Then you can read and post in the Group (Community/Magazine) just like you would on a Threadiverse application. You can also create public and private groups.</p><p>And there is no need to use a Bluesky bridge if the Friendica instance you are on has the integration turned on.</p><p>Here's an excellent 5-minute video showing Friendica created by <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://my-place.social/profile/earthman" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>earthman</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://hear-me.social/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFGLRgnaeLc" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=QFGLRgnaeL</span><span class="invisible">c</span></a></p>

Jupiter Rowland@<a href="https://tutoteket.no/@cmyrland" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Carl Myrland</a> The closest there is would be the Threadiverse: Lemmy, Mbin, PieFed. Technically all Reddit replacements. The latter two are probably even more appropriate because they've got somewhat better support for Fediverse software that isn't a Reddit clone.<br><br>You can join a Lemmy community, an Mbin magazine or a PieFed community with a Mastodon account by following it. Starting new threads is not "Mastodon 101" straight-forward because you have to take a few things into consideration (Mastodon has no real support for groups, that's why), but it's possible. And if you go over to Lemmy or Mbin or PieFed, all you see is groups, only groups and nothing but groups.<br><br>What you cannot do, however, is log onto a Lemmy, Mbin or PieFed instance with your Mastodon account and get your own personal, customisable feed. This is generally not how the Fediverse works. The only non-Mastodon place where you can "log in" with your Mastodon credentials and have a local user account automagically created with the self-same login credentials is Pixelfed.<br><br>Also, especially Lemmy is populated by 99% former Redditors. They haven't adopted Mastodon's culture just because they're in the Fediverse. Most of them barely know that Mastodon exists. Instead, Lemmy has Reddit's culture all over. Prepare for culture clashes with Mastodon users on the losing side because all mods are formerly from Reddit, too.<br><br>#<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Long" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Long</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=LongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">LongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLong" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLong</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWLongPost" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWLongPost</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=FediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=CWFediverseMeta" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">CWFediverseMeta</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Threadiverse" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Threadiverse</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Lemmy" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Lemmy</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=Mbin" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mbin</a> #<a class="" href="https://hub.netzgemeinde.eu/search?tag=PieFed" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">PieFed</a>
