As with other town halls held by Republicans across the country, Congresswoman Victoria Spartz was met in her Indiana district by a group of angry constituents who challenged her on the decisions being made by the Trump administration, from threatening to cut public media funding to deporting migrants without due process.

I miss Vermont Town Meetings. The real ones, not the Australian ballot ones.

Of course, if Spouse and I still lived in his hometown, we wouldn't be able to participate in the lasagna and pie lunch, because covid, but still. I miss hearing the usual suspects get up and give their usual speeches or corrections to the moderator or Select Board. I miss the ridiculous questions posed to the assessors. I miss the experience of seeing our neighbors as they spoke about what's important to them, even when I disagreed.

I spoke on the microphone several times at Town Meeting today (against the police budget, for having the town clerk's position maybe be appointed and not elected). The last time, as I was thanking people for showing up, I said "Democracy is a pain in the ass" and I was very proud of me because I am sure we were all thinking it, a bit tired out after three hours of discussion, debate and voting, but I do believe it beats most alternatives.
