French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was banned from running for public office with immediate effect after a court found her guilty of misappropriating EU funds through her National Rally party.

The ban will last for five years, as demanded by prosecutors. She has also been handed a four-year prison sentence to be served with an electronic tag.

Prosecutors seek a seven-year jail term for ex-president Sarkozy in Libya trial.

French prosecutors have requested a seven-year jail sentence and a €300,000 fine for French former president Nicolas Sarkozy for allegedly taking millions of euros from late Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi to help his 2007 election campaign.

Sarkozy, president of France from 2007-2012, denies the charges.

An Algerian court on Thursday sentenced French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, whose case has been at the heart of a diplomatic storm, to five years behind bars. The author is known for his criticism of Algerian authorities as well as of Islamists.
