New vocab for me today (and it really captures the spirit of the moment - blatantly stolen from Wiki):

Kakistocracy (/ˌkækɪˈstɒkrəsi/ KAK-ist-OK-rə-see) is government by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous people.[1]: 54 [2][3]

The word was coined as early as the 17th century[4] and derives from two Greek words, kákistos (κάκιστος, 'worst') and krátos (κράτος, 'rule'), together meaning 'government by the worst people'.[5]

I can see some slack-jawed rich kid with all Fs talking to his high school guidance counselor:

"Chad, your grades are abysmal. Your understanding of the English language is nil. You lack insight, integrity, and logical skills..."

"So, what? My dad won't let me go to trade school."

"Of course not, you'd never make it. I was thinking: government."

alojapan.com/1228109/how-your- How your favorite Japanese video games are translated into English #Japan #JapanNews #Japanese #JapaneseNews #news #nihongo #Translation #VideoGames #vocabulary Translating video games can lead to surprising linguistic innovation. When Jeremy Blaustein had to translate “現地調達” (genchi chōtatsu, local acquisitions) for Metal Gear Solid, he coined the term OSP or “on-site procurement,” a term that went on to be used by other games and continues…

The start of the blurb on the back cover of a book about two Uranian private detectives in Victorian times:

“At a time when a man could be imprisoned or worse for being who he is, these two are flaunting the system to solve the mystery of an elusive and scandalous poet.”

“Flaunting” instead of “flouting”. O the embarrassment. Not that I think either term would apply. The pair are certainly not being ostentatious about their orientation, since that would lead to prison. So no flaunting.

And while they are breaking the rules by existing, they're certainly not being brazen about it, because, again, that way lies hard labor. Thus, no flouting. #vocabulary

1. The representation of someone as existing or something as happening in other than chronological, proper, or historical order.
2. One that is out of its proper or chronological order, especially a person or practice that belongs to an earlier time: "A new age had plainly dawned, an age that made the institution of a segregated picnic seem an anachronism" (Henry Louis Gates, Jr.).

Opened up a notebook this morning I doubt I've looked at in at least five years and on the last page I found a list of words I intended to look up and was probably scribbled in 2015. It includes the words coeval, armamentarium, vitiate, aphantasia, perspicuous, and erubescant. Epicene, anent and atleic are on the list too but those have definitions given along side. I have no idea what I was reading at the time that might have prompted this particular vocabulary list.

Please, everyone, stop using the word "gaslighting" when what you really mean is just "spewing stupid bullshit".

People can be wrong, even completely deluded, about things, and insist on their delusions, but that's *very* different from "trying to manipulate your perceptions in order to make you doubt your sanity."

(I know it's too late to stop the complete destruction of any coherent meaning for this word. But I'm still fighting it anyway.)
