#Iceland #volcano eruption forces #evacuation of town & iconic geothermal spa

A #VolcanicEruption in southwestern Iceland has once again forced the evacuation of local residents & the internationally known #BlueLagoon geothermal spa, the national broadcaster RUV reported.

The eruption began around 4AM
Wednesday following an intense seismic swarm on the #Reykjanes Peninsula, southwest of the capital, #Reykjavik, Iceland’s Met Office said.

Fagradalsfjall Volcanic Eruption Before Sunrise, Iceland

The Fagradalsfjall volcanic eruption, which began in March 2021, marked a significant geological event on the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland. This eruption was notable for its relatively gentle effusive activity, characterized by the emission of lava flows rather than explosive volcanic eruptions. The eruption site, located near the Fagradalsfjall mountain, attracted considerable attention from scientists and tourists alike due to its accessibility and the stunning visual displays of flowing lava.
The eruption was preceded by a series of earthquakes, signaling the movement of magma beneath the surface. This seismic activity is common in Iceland, which sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a tectonic boundary where the North American and Eurasian plates are diverging. The eruption itself produced impressive lava fountains and created vast fields of basaltic lava, reshaping the landscape.
Over the course of several months, the eruption underwent various phases, with periods of intensified activity and quieter times.

Neolithic ‘sun stones’ sacrificed in Denmark to revive the sun after volcanic eruption

Around 4,900 years ago, Neolithic communities on the Danish island of Bornholm ritually buried hundreds of engraved stones, so-called “sun stones,” in a remarkable act to counter drastic climate changes caused by a massive volcanic eruption...

Been streaming this live since I first got up this morning (about six hours now) and the core of the fountain has clearly moved "forward" toward the camera, although it's still hidden behind the crater wall

Main outflow stream has also moved "foward" toward the camera and is *very* vigorous -- to the point you can actually see the darker, cooled surface of the stream actually "sloshing" like a thick gravy just above the incandescent, fluid stream

Unfortunately (as it's Christmas, I'd guess) the camera is clearly unstaffed and is running on auto

UPDATE: there is one zoom-in at about 08:38 local time (see the timestamp, upper left)

Love to see a zoom out and a pan off to the left to get a sense of what the wider scope of all this is

But this sucker has really lit off, just in time for Christmas

This last year I've numerous times thought to myself "is there still an active volcanic eruption happening less than 50 km from my home?" I have even lost count of how many eruptions there have been since they began

The thing is that most of the danger associated with these eruptions has been connected to their exact location and how they start. The initial phase is short but powerful but then they slowly exhaust themselves.

The ones which I was mindful of for a period of time were those that threatened vital infrastructure (mostly roads and a power-plant).

For my day-to-day life the threat of air-pollution is what I've needed to be mindful of.

We will likely get a new eruption before the end of the year.

#Iceland
#Grindavík

The government of #Iceland is buying up houses in the town of #Grindavík because of all the #VolcanicEruptions nearby. The owners have to clean these houses before they hand them over.

So yesterday my wife's cousin (I do know a lot of people who lived in Grindavík) was going to clean her house and was doing stuff on social media about the process. Then the air-raid sirens went off and she had to get out of town fast before the #VolcanicEruption started.

Seems dangerous.
