Those of us living in places that look likely to be more hospitable to life than others in the near future need to start thinking about the futures we want to build.

How do we preserve what we have, restore what has been lost, and create equitable ways of life?

How can we build capacity to welcome the displaced and the dispossessed?

There's nowhere that is safe from climate change and ecological destruction, but there are some places which will be safer than others. And some of us live in those places already!

Maybe there's work for us to do that is specific to the places we're in. I love the place I live, but how much more would I love it if it became a real refuge for other beings and a place of health and life?

It would have to be sustainable—truly sustainable—if we suddenly had more people here and tried to keep living lives of consumption, the land and the lakes would be stripped of whatever resources remain.

But other ways of being exist.
