SO.

For my recent birthday, my cousins all pitched in and got me a III
(I'm old enough to remember when it was FF3 and not FF6). Hell of a gift.

I've got the game in at least two other formats, and I've lost track of how many times I've played it, but I'm giving mild thought to firing up the OG hardware yet again. Which has me thinking about nostalgia and other stuff, and the easy familiarity of returning to the media of your youth.

With the added bonus of the fact that, due to the somewhat primitive nature of oldschool video game design and storytelling, there's far less "oh, this didn't age well" stuff in the plot, especially when compared to the old sci-fi paperbacks I devoured at the time.

Or maybe that's rose colored glasses, I dunno.

@DapperDinobot I played FF4 (back when the US marketing called it FF2) first, FF6 (as "FF3") when it came out, and eventually got to play FF5.

Comparing the three, I'd say while all of them have their flaws, FF6 is definitely something special storywise compared to the other two, and FF5 something special gameplaywise. FF4 holds a nostalgic place in my heart, but I fully admit it doesn't hold up as well objectively.
