Let's talk some more about #ttrpg NPCs. What functions do they serve? So far, I have this list:
- Narrative Advancement (eg. questgivers)
- Mechanical Advancement (eg. shopkeepers)
- Mechanical Advantage (eg. hirelings)
- MacGuffin (eg. hostage that needs rescuing)
- Narrative Foil (eg. BBEG/rival)
- Vulnerability (eg. VtM touchstones)
- Lore Dispenser (eg. sage/librarian)
- Background Detail (eg. parents/family)
- Window Dressing (eg. people on the street)
Can anyone think of more?
@kastark I'm playing Stonetop which is a PbtA game about building a community on the edges of civilization.
There is a lot of opportunity to bring in Family and towns folk, but they serve more as Narrative Foils and Vulnerability? They are the reason for your characters actions more often than not. I'm inclined to call them Emotional Anchors to the campaign.
@Litis Ooh, "emotional anchor" is a great term, I'm definitely going to use that one in the future.
