Dipping into this RPG book, a casual read rather than a serious attempt to take the rules on board. We often chat about so-called narrative or storytelling RPGs at Whartson Hall: there are elements of some I like, but it's not helped by the fact that if you ask six people to describe a storytelling game you'll get seven definitions. Very often I find the focus of the rules to be in the wrong place, usually because the designer clearly had a very specific bad experience with a GM and wants to ensure that their rules will *never* let that happen again. A book of rules in place of a paragraph of GM advice isn't what I'm after.

The previous edition of this game, called Wordplay, was packed with appealing ideas, but there's no way that the Whartson Hall crew would have gone for the mechanic of adding as many dice as possible to your roll, the sort of scrabbling for bonuses that has people poring over their character sheets and trying to make an argument for using everything they have written down. I believe that's been revised in the update, so we'll see. Or I'll end up playing Fudge. Possibly.

@BigJackBrass I also did two posts on converting from to

I am biased about the game engine, but it's one that I find works well; powerful characters still have an edge of vulnerability but it's not as swingy as some other dice pool systems (@TheTweedmeister did the maths for that).

Bizarrely, some of the mechanics of the pool work really well to build interaction (eg giving someone else your dice if you help so you can see if you make the big difference)
