I don’t know what they are (some kind of , maybe?), nor why they’re doing it, but these things are all over my clothesline, climbing to the pegs’ tops to splay their jaws and sun themselves.

(It’s not a great , I admit. I wish I could get my phone to focus-stack.)

Two insects, ants perhaps, perch on the grip ends of a plastic clothes peg, on opposite grips, but parallel and both facing to the right. Their backs are arched so they face upwards, and their mandibles are open wide.

Dammit, I forgot to follow this up. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Special thanks to @Armadillosoft for suggesting iNaturalist. The folks there confirmed @alexwild’s ID: they're female flower wasps of family Thynnidae, subfamily Thynninae—en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thynnidae.

As @si_fuller suggested, they *were* doing something with pheromones: namely, looking for mates.
