I have an #airtravel dilemma. There’s this wall of thunderstorms covering Ohio. I’m meant to fly from Virginia to Ohio mid-day. #UnitedAirlines is offering to let me change my flight for free.

On the one hand, if I am less willing to fly than they are, I don’t have to. That’s nice of them. On the other hand, they know way more than I do about how to judge the risk. At the time they’re allowing me to change, with the weather map looking like this, my flight is still marked “on-time.” I’m confident they will not board that plane and let us take off unless they are damn sure we will make it safely. That’s their job and they have a good track record.

So why would I second guess them? What do I bring to the table that they don’t? They haven’t given me any information to help make that decision. But they’ve given me free rein to do so.
I would never recommend you take my flight safety advice over United’s, so I wouldn’t take my advice over theirs either.

It’s a bit of a dilemma. It seems unlikely that my flight will go as scheduled, but they seem to be pushing ME to make that call.

Dobrin points to an article published just the day before her trip, in which Oriana Pawlyk and Sam Ogozalek say,

"The first wave of White House-ordered firings at the Federal Aviation Administration included employees who play important roles in the safety of air travel — despite the Trump administration’s assurances that no 'critical' staff" had been axed."

what if international air travel was limited so that there was only one international airport in a range of 1500km, or country.

So Vancouver would be the only International aiprort in BC, but Seattle or Portland would still be the PNW hub for the USA.

And those international airports could only have one flight between any other international airport.

This would:

a) greatly increase the use of land-based options for 1000km+ distances (which can then be electrified)

b) Incentivizes plane manufacturers to build more efficient, large planes that can take a larger number of people efficiently, rather than smaller planes that are cheaper to build, but proliferate, doubling/tripling the fuel use.
