Former Greens MP, Gareth Hughes, writing in Stuff (8/4/23) makes an astute observation about #Ardern - while stupendous in event-based crises, she was incrementalist (even conservative) in addressing systemic crises.

Arguably, her biggest misstep was ruling out a CGT - a tax (that at $4B+ pa) would’ve significantly helped fund critical infrastructure, tackle economic inequality & re-balance a tax system overly reliant on taxing income (NZ’s still the only OECD member without some form of CGT).

I've seen a lot of posts lamenting #Ardern's leaving politics, but, for me, it's great. She left without being under a cloud of controversy or scandal, and achieved a lot as PM.

If only more leaders did this they'd be remembered as decent humans, rather than corrupt power-hungry despots

#Trump, #Johnson and #Ardern were in office at the same time. They faced the same threat of Covid - but it would be disingenuous to say they did this together.

Which one really understood the science and did everything in their power to protect the lives of an entire nation? Who indulged in conspiracy theories? And who thought it could let it rip and then let the bodies pile high while he partied?

The #FarRight see today as a victory. I see a strong principled women leaving on her own terms.
